Question

Hi,

I wish to make a purchase of a Dell Pro Max 16 Plus laptop with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS running on it. However, I have a few questions:-

1. Does this laptop compulsorily include a WWAN chip on it? Can I exclude it while placing an order?

2. Is it possible to exclude the WLAN chip as well? I don't see a need for it for my specific use case.

3. I wish to purchase a configuration with 2 nos of 1 TB SSD, Gen4, SED and use them in a RAID1 configuration. I understand that the laptop has Intel RST support in hardware, but that might not work very well with Ubuntu. The Dell sales rep also mentioned that they are unable to offer RAID in Ubuntu. Is this true? If Dell supplies 2 SSD's in 2 slots (this laptop has up to 3 SSD slots) on this laptop, will I not be able to configure RAID1 in software RAID using 'mdadm' in Ubuntu?

1.  No. 2.  No. 3.  You can't order RAID1 from the factory, but Ubuntu is available for this model, so it does have support for it.  If you don't use RST, you will need to set up software RAID.

1. / 2. Usually the WAN is an m.2 card that can be removed. Usually if they offer multiple different Wireless, it is a card you can remove.But sometimes they are hard wired to the motherboard. You cannot exclude it though. But you can usually disable it in the BIOS.

3. Multiple Hard Drives (NVME)

The Alienware 16 and 18 Area-51 has x3 m.2 Gen 4 slots (My choice for the cost)

The Alienware 16X Aurora (Modle AC16251 only. Not Model AC16250) has x2 M.2 slots \

The Precision 3591, 5690, and 7780, have x2 m.2 slots

All of them max out at 64GB ram except the Precision 7780 which has a max of 128GB Ram.

If you can afford the precision 7780, it is the most powerfull of the group.

The reason for going with Pro Max 16 Plus laptop is that it was advertised as a device suitable for performing on-device AI, with its choice of suitable NPU and dGPU's.
