BitLocker related : Keep asking for the "recovery key" when bookup

Recently we encountered the following issues (following link) and we found that the problem can't be completely resolved.  (The BitLocker recovery key will still be prompted)

We found when we plug our docking station into the laptop, the BitLocker will prompt again for the Recovery Key.

Our action step

1/ Enter the recovery key of BitLocker (no docking station plug-in)

2/ Docking station is plug-in and reboot the laptop, its prompt again the BitLocker recovery key

3/ When we plug out the docking station and reboot the laptop, it will prompt again the BitLocker recovery key.

Please suggest if there is any permanent solution to fix this case?

Hi

This may not be suitable ......

First, check the obvious triggers

Run through these checks once you are booted into Windows (after entering the recovery key):

  • If you recently changed BIOS/UEFI settings: undo any switches between UEFI/Legacy, Secure Boot on/off, SATA mode changes (AHCI/RAID), or boot‑order changes that added/removable devices before the internal disk.

  • If this started after a BIOS update or motherboard work: confirm TPM is Enabled and Activated in BIOS (TPM 2.0/PTT on Dell).

  • If you boot via USB‑C / Thunderbolt dock: disconnect the dock and boot directly once; if that fixes it, disable “Boot from Thunderbolt/USB‑C” (Boot support / Pre‑boot for TBT) in BIOS so dock devices are not in the boot list.

  • If you have been moving SATA ports or adding/removing internal drives: restore the original wiring/port order if possible, as BitLocker monitors those topology changes.

Consider the implications before attempting any changes.

Re‑seal BitLocker to current hardware

Once BIOS/TPM/boot layout look correct and you can log into Windows, re‑bind BitLocker to the current state:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.

  2. Temporarily suspend protection:
    manage-bde -protectors -disable C:

  3. Reboot once all the way into Windows (no BIOS changes during this reboot).

  4. Re‑enable protection:
    manage-bde -protectors -enable C:

Dear Anne_droid,

Thanks for your reply to my submitted question, but the step of "Re‑seal BitLocker to current hardware" being tried and not work for us.

This case just happened from this month when the user has activity to plug (or unplug) the external docking station from the laptop, the BitLocker Recovery Key will be asked.

Our workaround solution is to temporarily disable the "BitLocker" at this moment.
