BIOS 1.14 Regression on Dell Pro Micro QCM1250 – HDMI Causes Degraded GPU Initialization State (Boot Time 20s → 57s)

Posting this to document a reproducible issue on the Dell Pro Micro QCM1250 after updating to BIOS 1.14, in case other users encounter the same behavior.  After upgrading from BIOS 1.13.2 → 1.14, the system began entering a degraded GPU initialization state when using HDMI. This occurs during firmware bring‑up — before GRUB or Windows Boot Manager — resulting in an incomplete GPU init sequence and degraded system performance.  Below is the observed behavior:

  • Headless Operation message appears - even though an HDMI monitor is attached
  • HDMI begins initializing normally

  • GPU fails to complete its full initialization sequence

  • Firmware drops the GPU into a degraded state

  • System boots, but performance is slow and laggy

  • Boot time increases from ~20 seconds → ~57 seconds

This behavior did not occur under BIOS 1.13.2.

The workaround:  Switching to a DisplayPort monitor immediately resolves the issue. DisplayPort forces a different GPU initialization path, avoiding the regression.  After switching to DP, boot time returned to normal (~20 seconds), confirming the GPU was stuck in a degraded state during HDMI‑based firmware initialization.

Additional Notes:

  • BIOS 1.14 appears to introduce a GPU initialization timing regression.

  • Dell support confirmed Linux is supported on this system but could not reproduce the issue internally.

  • A “Headless Operation” message appears on boot when HDMI is used. This message may not appear under DP, but I am noting it for others who may encounter it.

  • HDMI‑only boot remains unreliable under BIOS 1.14.

Documenting this so other users do not get stuck after updating if they only have an HDMI monitor. If your QCM1250 has difficulty booting after the BIOS update, switching to a DisplayPort monitor restores normal operation and performance.
