Pro Slim Essential QVS1260, Integral RAM upgrade not working

I recently purchased a small batch of Dell Pro Slim Essential QVS1260 desktops with 8GB DDR5 RAM. In addition to this I purchased (at the recommendation of our reseller) 8GB RAM from Integral to go along-side.

The additional RAM purchased is Integral IN5T8GNHWBX "8GB PC RAM MODULE DDR5 4800MT/s PC5-38400 UNBUFFERED NON-ECC DIMM 1.1V 1GX16 CL40 1Rank"

According to the spec sheet on Dell it should support this RAM - https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-uk/dell-pro-qvs1260-slim-desktop/dell-pro-slim-essential-qvs1260-om/memory?guid=guid-e9d2ea83-38a4-431d-803c-96d63c1dbc34&lang=en-us

However the PC will not boot with the RAM at all.

Looking at the provided RAM in the Dell machine it came with SK Hynix HMCG66AGBUA084N 8GB DDR5 - which according to Google is a 5600 MHz module.

However within the BIOS summary screen it states that the module is a 4800 MHz module. So i'm totally at a loss as to what is correct and what is supported.

My reseller is sending out some 5600 MHz modules for me to test. But wondered if there was any other issues that people had come across before.

I've tried

  • just booting with the new RAM only.
  • booting with no RAM and then inserting the new ram in Slot 1
  • Removing Time clock battery

For direct Dell Technical Support, click the blue "Get Help Now" on the right to start a private live chat session. Share with them the private Service Tag, issues, this thread link, and all of your troubleshooting. This will in turn generate a unique Technical Support case for your unique Service Tag.

The original OEM Hynix memory would indeed be a 5600MHz stick. However, it downclocks to 4800MHz during operation. Hence why it shows up that way in the BIOS. If these units aren't booting with the Integral memory, but do boot with the OEM memory, then there must be some form of incompatibility with the 3rd party memory. Granted, it does seem to fit our spec sheet - unbuffered, non ECC, and 4800MHz. On a technical aspect, I'm not seeing why it wouldn't work. It may be worth updating the BIOS on the units, I see 1.12.2 fixed an issue with memory not displaying correctly so it may be able to get that memory to be detected correctly.

One thing to note about mix matched memory is that there can be additional instability. Typically memory would downclock itself to match the slowest speed. In this instance, we're not even getting that far but still is something to keep in mind. If all of the units don't accept the Integral memory, then I think your best would be to wait on the 5600MHz to come in. Should that also not work out, then I'd contact Dell Support to see if there is anything else they want to try out.

You should read the (existing, working) RAM DIMMs with something like CPU-Z ... to get the true SPD data. You can compare that to what is in the PDF manual, and what the new ones say.

If it matches, those might work but Dell's are inherently finicky about ram-dimms.

Install one DIMM. If that works, you can install a matching-pair in proper slots to form a full memory-bank (and it should run as the preferred "Dual Channel mode"). Be sure you know which slots for Bank-0. Don't try mixing DIMMs (especially if you are already having troubles).

Sometimes Dell's and some others are finicky about the RAM being 2 different brands.  See if an exact match works.

Received new ram from Integral. Which is 4800MHz again. But this lot works.

These modules have a green colour PCB and have Hynix chips on them. It pretty much looks identical to the Dell provided one but with an Integral sticker on it.

I suspect the original Integral RAM isn't what the sticker is saying it is. It does have more chips on it than the new SK Hynix one, although that may not make a difference.

I reckon it's an Integral admin issue.
