Pro Micro QCM1255, powered by P2725QE?

Hi, just checking if what I'm trying to do is possible. I have a Dell Pro Micro QCM1255 (35w CPU) system, with the USB Type-C with DisplayPort Alt mode and Power-In Support add-on card installed and a P2725QE monitor with a DisplayPort 90w PD port.

Should it be possible for me to power this system directly from the monitor? As it stands the fan spins up briefly then the system fails to boot, no signal detected via USB-C then it repeats this.

Any help given would be greatly appreciated.

These are usually designed to take power from an adapter and then supply it to a monitor - not the reverse.  That should be possible.  The reverse (powering the system from the monitor) likely won't be.

I agree with ejn63.

But I am confused.

Are you trying to setup like this =

Pro Micro QCM1255 I/O module USB-C port --> USB-C to DP cable? --> P2725QE #5 DP port?

Or this =

Pro Micro QCM1255 I/O module USB-C port --> P2725QE USB-C to USB-C cable --> P2725QE #6 USB-C port

Thanks for your replies both of you.

@ejn63 I’ve just tried it that way around and the monitor doesn’t power on at all.

@DELL-ChrisM2 I’m doing this one:

Pro Micro QCM1255 I/O module USB-C port --> P2725QE USB-C to USB-C cable --> P2725QE #6 USB-C port

We know that the usage desired is validated for laptops, but must not be validated for these micro desktops. You will need to plu in the provided AC power adapter to the micro desktop rear power port.

Fair enough, not the end of the world!

Out of curiosity, what is the intended purpose of an add-on card with power-in support on these micro PCs if not a use case similar to this?

I’ve tried something similar before, and from what I understand the Pro Micro QCM1255 system typically needs more stable input than what the P2725QE can provide through its USB-C port. The monitor does support 90W PD output, but the way the system negotiates power delivery isn’t always guaranteed to match the monitor’s capabilities.

That’s why you see it spin the fan briefly and then shut down—it’s likely not getting consistent startup current. Most of these small form factor systems are designed with their own power adapter in mind, even if they have USB-C with DP Alt Mode and power-in support.

You might be able to use it as a video/data connection while still powering the system through its dedicated power adapter, but relying on the monitor alone isn’t officially supported and tends to be unstable.

If your goal is a single-cable setup, I’d recommend checking the system’s technical specs or Dell documentation for exact USB-C PD requirements. That way you can confirm whether it can truly accept 90W PD or if it expects a specific profile.
