Pro Max Slim FCS1250, hard disk is impossible!
Hi,
I purchased a Dell Pro Max Slim (FCS1250) a couple of weeks ago and was told, by "Dell support", that I could install a hard disk in the model I purchased - however that appears to be incorrect (or impossible) or worse.
Why is this you ask, well, as can be seen by the user manual for the FCS1250 to install a hard disk 4 plastic bushes and screws are required. These are not supplied with the PC UNLESS, I assume, you buy a hard disk with the PC - but I didn't need/want a hard disk I have lots and a 2TB disk was waaaay too small - I wanted 8TB. So I talk to tech support (they appear to understand) and they put me on the EMEA spares who send me.... wait for it... 4 standard 3.5 HDD mounting screws (without the plastic bushes and much too short) at great expence - mine!
There appears to be no way I can get the plastic bushes/screws I require unless I buy a "disposable" hard drive at the time of ordering the PC. VERY POOR SHOW DELL. I've use Dell PC for years and they have usually come with spare HDD mounting caddies or whatever - not absolute bare minimum, but these are soooooo penny pinching the 4 plastic bushes and screws are omitted from a build that does not have a harddisk factory installed.
Any ideas?
I have sent them pictures of the "missing" parts from a) their online manual and b) from the internal picture inside the PC.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Regards
Callum

Re: Any ideas?
Dell systems have been built with proprietorship for a long time now. For drive cage parts and bracket or carrier, customers have to source those spare parts online (eBay, Amazon) as Dell does not make them easily available for customers post purchase.

Same thing here - I wanted to order an FCS1250 with just the HDD caddy, but the ordering website would not allow ordering the caddy without HDD. Sales told me that I could order the caddy from tech support once I had the PC and its service tag.
Surprise: now tech support tells me that the caddy is not available separately and that I should return the PC and re-order it with caddy and HDD.
Is this some kind of joke? Are they really trying to say that upgrading their upper-end desktop PCs with a simple hard disk will be impossible because you cannot get a mounting for it? Dell, you HAVE to do better than that.
I'm very disappointed and I sincerely hope that these will be made avaliable.
Best regards,
Stefan

I bought the ECS1250 and planned to upgrade memory (done) and add a hard drive. I bounced back and forth between Tech Support and Sales. The best I could get was that Sales expected to be selling the rotation bay in October. However, why is the disk drive limited to only 2TB in size?

Just found this while searching the Dell website.

Priced at $35. I ordered one with delivery expected in 2 weeks.
I will let you know if it works.

@BillFerg99 Did it work? I ordered what sales told me was a hard drive kit, part 470-BFBQ.... and it was 2 hard drive cables for $35.... NOT a tray, caddy or mounting hardware at all. This is pitiful.

@JDS Networking
I was expecting the mounting bracket today, then I got a notice that my shipment was delayed until next week. When I receive it, I will post my results here on the Dell Community.

Unfortunately the desktop that was ordered was upgraded to the 125W Thermal cooling which isn't compatible with the hard drive cables and brackets.

@JDS Networking Received the bracket this week. Package included SATA power and data cables, a clip to secure the cables to the chassis, and 4 mounting screws for the hard drive. Took me about 30 minutes to install the drive. That would have been quicker, but there is a small bracket in the PC that must be removed when you add the rotation bay. This info was not in the instructions. Here is what comes in the box:
There is a cable clip with the power and data cables. The clip is installed here:
Power and data cables plug into the motherboard as shown:
You then attach the hard drive to the rotation bay bracket with the 4 screws supplied. Attach the other ends of the power and data cables to the hard drive, and place the combined drive and bracket into the chassis. ONE NOTE! the online instructions don't show this, but if your Slim ECS1250 did not originally come with a hard drive, there is a small bracket on the chassis that must be removed. You will no longer need to keep this bracket. See the next two pictures:
When all is in place, it looks like this:
I booted up my computer, and everything started right up. The rotation bay bracket cost me $35 from Dell.

@BillFerg99 Thank you very much for this information. My package arrived this week and I hope to get to the installation in the next couple of days. I really appreciate your documenting this project.
