Using OME to update via DRAC only vs O/S and OMSA

Hi,

Is it better to use OME to update Windows clients via the O/S (with OMSA installed), rather than through the DRAC only?

I have noticed that during the past 12+ months that OME has not been updated, but OMSA has a few times. I am guessing that the O/S via OMSA is the preferred method  to update servers, but I just want to check.

Thx,

John Bradshaw

Hi John,

As far as i know you can only update O/S related stuff through the "in band" method  (With OMSA installed).

I don't knkow about windows because we only manage Linux servers with OME but on Linux i cannot do an update for O/S drivers by through iDRAC.

Hi John,

If the server generations are 12th and 13th, then you have advantage updating Firmware/Bios/Drivers via iDRAC (OOB method) without going via OS interface.

However, there are some OS related drivers which are not supported by iDRAC (OOB method) for update, for that you need to rely on OS method(with OMSA installed).

Also, from OME 2.0, you can do system via OS method (inband) even if there is no OMSA installed after following certain steps. Refer the whitepaper for more details: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20440699

Thanks,
Vijay
