Updating firmware/BIOS using OME and iDRAC

Quick question. If I update BIOS and firmware (e.g. NIC) using OME via the iDRAC, does anything need to be done on the server first? I have several new ESXi R720s that I need to update. They're not running any VMs (they haven't been configured/set up yet) but they are turned on and are at the basic ESXi login screen. My understanding is that the iDRAC will do everything in the background and then only reboot the server once it's finished, so the only downtime is during the reboot. Is that correct?

If the situation changes and the servers do have VMs set up, will anything need to be done before I run the system updates from OME? The iDRACs are all discovered using WS-MAN.

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes your understanding is correct. You don't need to do anything on the server. But make sure that the required ports are opened between OME and iDRAC when you are performing system update via iDRAC.

Thanks. Which ports are you referring to and how would I check that they're open? Does ESXi need to be put into "maintenance mode" or is that only when it has running VMs?

I don't think you need to put ESXi to maintenance mode, that is required when you have live migration enabled on ESXi. The ports required to be opened can be found in the OME user guide at
