Packages are pushed, but remote system is not updated

Hello,

When using System Update I have selected a non-compliant system, selected components to update and "Apply Selected Updates". The command completes successfully, but the system is not updated. When I view the log for the action I see:

Package(s) copied     downloads.dell.com/.../Diagnostics_Application_92PN7_WN32_5158A3_5158.2.EXE ;   downloads.dell.com/.../ESM_Firmware_0F12K_WN32_1.99_A00.EXE ;   downloads.dell.com/.../R715_BIOS_XT83D_WN64_3.2.2.EXE ;   downloads.dell.com/.../Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_WN64_1.7.5.4_A00.EXE ;   downloads.dell.com/.../R715_Drivers-for-OS-Deployment_Application_R9DP4_WN64_15.04.00_A00.EXE ;   downloads.dell.com/.../SAS-Drive_Firmware_0JYGF_WN64_DA0B_A03.EXE

But nothing else, and when I re-evaluate the server or log into it, it clearly has not updated any of these components.

Thanks,
-Mathew

Hi Mathew,

Could you please help us with some basic information:

  • What is the update method? (OMSA or iDRAC)
  • Did the server under concern reboot on applying update?

1. I believe the update method is OMSA. OMSA 6.5 is installed on the server (PowerEdge R715). I have provided windows credentials when pushing the update.

2. The server did not reboot.

There were actually two messages in the summery page:

This was the second code, but the system did not actually update this as far as I can tell.

PackageCode  0
PackageFileName  C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\s4sg\SAS-Drive_Firmware_0JYGF_WN64_DA0B_A03.EXE
PackageReleaseId  Not Available
PackageState  complete
PackageStatus  2
TotalStatusMessage  Software update complete.

I have a similar issue.

IDRAC firmware is shown 2.10.10. and needs update to 2.15.

After update and inventory,  OME still show old version and update needed.  When updated it again,  the log showed the firmware is same version. Update not necessary.

However, OME still show firmware as old version. update still needed.    I did discovery/inventory several times. still same behavior.

OME version 2.01.2222

The version of this Update Package is the same as the currently installed version.

Software application name: iDRAC

Package version: 2.15.10.10

Installed version: 2.15.10.10

Executing update(elipsis)

F2000SA,

I just spent a total of ~10 hours in the past few days on the phone with Dell and have worked out most of the issues. Hopefully this can help you.

#1. Do all your discovery and updates through SNMP. For reasons that couldn't be explained to me, more data and options were available that way. You'll need to make sure the SNMP service is running and the traps are setup correctly on the OME and OMSA systems.

#2. Make sure that your OME server has access to the internet, and then delete the catalog and downloaded files from C:\Program Files\Dell\SysMgt\Essentials\SystemUpdate\Packages. It was found that these were corrupt.

#3. Use the troubleshooting tool to clear the iDRAC Jobs. (System Update Tab) Select iDRAC Jobs, Delete all jobs.

#4. Update the components in this order:

  1. Idrac
  2. Lcc
  3. Bios (this will need rebooting)

Once you have these core updates done, proceed to:

  1. Secondary  firmware releases (NIC, SAS, PSU)
  2. Last would be Driver releases.

Dell and I continued to have issues with the Intel X520 NIC. :

  1. If OME reports the firmware at version 0 we should manually install version 14.5.8
  2. Once 14.5.8 is installed and reported by OMSA proceed with the 16.5.20 install via OME

Hope this helps.
