OS Driver Pack installation issues (Process Secure Update Failed)
We have an issue when we try to install the 'OS Driver Pack' (R720_Drivers-for-OS-Deployment_Application_HK41X_WN64_15.02.12_A00.EXE) for our Dell PowerEdge R720 Server.
After running the installation and 4 minutes into the process we get 'Update Failure: Process Secure Update Failed.' Restarted the server numerous times. The server is already patched up with the latest bios and firmware.

We have tried all means and are currently unable to solve this issue. Has anyone come across the 'Process Secure Update Failed' and managed to solve it. It would be much appreciated!

Hi Sheldon,
If the server in question is still under Dell warranty I would advise to call Dell Support for this issue.

My server is doing this too, R520, also R7xx and R6xx machines have been seen doing this if you search for the error message.
What would be nice is if someone could document what this means:
"Update Failure: Process Secure Update Failed."
I've seen it on Linux, they are seeing it here on Windows, same error - what is that error and how can it be fixed? Why contact support and keep the resolution of this issue a secret?

Yup I contacted support alright unfortunately for the server I have, there is no online chat support. Either a phone call or email through a ticketing system.
Sent them two emails and there is virtually no reply from them. I had posted on another Dell forum and people also face the same problem on some servers the patch work and for some not.
I don't think Dell is interested in helping out!

Were you able to call 800-945-3355? Hopefully, they can get you some support that way.

Rob

I cant call now. These types of issues tend to consume a ton of time on the phone. The the server is remote and the basic remote control idrac is useless (cant even ssh to the idrac on it) I need to figure out how to fix it before going over to where the server is - past experience with support calls is they want you in front of the machine or being able to idrac control it which isnt possible with basic-idrac.
It would be super awesome if someone from engineering could tell everyone what "'Update Failure: Process Secure Update Failed" means, how to fix it.

I had the same issue today, I tried the upgrade again after updating to the latest iDrac for the R520 - 2.20.20.20 , I also updated the NIC firmware, the Diagnostics and the SAS RAID controller (H710 mini). I tried after all of these updates and a reboot to account for them and the update for the OS driver pack failed again:
bash-4.1# ls
R520_Drivers-for-OS-Deployment_Application_JVN7M_LN_15.07.07_A00.BIN screenlog.0
bash-4.1# ./R520_Drivers-for-OS-Deployment_Application_JVN7M_LN_15.07.07_A00.BIN -q

Update Failure: Process Secure Update Failed.
I had to return to the ESXi as my maintenance window had ended.
So again, all updates work except the OS driver pack even with the latest iDrac firmware installed. We should get an update from Dell on these forums.
Is there any place on the entire dell.com site that documents what this means "Update Failure: Process Secure Update Failed." ?
This error is happening across multiple server platforms and it doesnt seem to matter if the iDRAC/LCM is used, or Linux , or Windows.

Hi,
This looks more to do with OS drivers pack - Dell update package( DUP). Will check with corresponding team.
Lets see if I can get some update.
Thanks,
Arun

Thanks Arun - here is some more information -
I have some pictures where I have updated via the Linux BIN and also tried the update directly from the lifecycle controller (basically putting the update on a network share and letting lifecyle do it directly). Both methods fail. Also others have had the issue from windows as well.
The pictures are here - they are in order, I show the upgrade, the upgrade process, after the process works and the right version is in the inventory but after reboot it falls back from the correct version to "0"
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B1hWmuu-gGgvdDFQUm5ZbnNOZEE&usp=sharing
I also have some more info in the other threads here (logs of how the idrac/lcm sees the upgrade in the logs and then shows it reverting)
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/177/t/19652164
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/177/t/19648404
Thanks again for checking this out, its driving me insane and because the iDrac is licensed as basic I cant do work on the system remotely. (Another note, where can I buy an iDrac license basic-> enterprise upgrade, the links in the iDrac itself are broken).

Thanks a lot for information. I understand, sorry for the inconvenience.
Will pass on the information to DUP team.
Regarding iDRAC license, please post the query to generic system management forum
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/f/4494/t/19648154
In that way people/team responsible will be directly answering the query.

Hi, Thanks for the follow-up.
They are working on this issue, trying to root cause.
Will update the thread once it is fixed and available for download.

Hi, any updates to this? There has been a new iDRAC release, 21.21.21.21, I didnt see any fixes for this if the iDRAC is the root cause for this issue.

i just had this issue today...
Fixed it by going into the lifecycle controller
Reset & Re-Purpose
Reset the: OS Drivers & the Lifecycle controller settings/ logs.
Then re install the OS Drivers from either Windows or the LC update firmware > FTP from dell.
Hope this saves someone the hair & time that I lost...

Hi, thanks a bunch for this tip. I will try this next maintenance window.
Do you know which lifecycle version you had when you did this?
Thanks again for the tip.
