OME - Unable to view Virtual Machines
Hello,
I have an ESX server added into OME as ESXi Host - SNMP + WS-MAN using a user that has Administrator rights on the host.
What else should I do to see the VMs defined on the host?
Thanks in advance and kind regards,
Ahugustin.

Hi Ahugustin,
Thanks for the query.
The virtual machines also need to be discovered along with the host. Please include VMs IP addresses in the discovery range configuration and see if that resolves the issue.
In addition to this, have a look at this white paper on how to setup and configure ESXi 5 for use in OpenManage Essentials: en.community.dell.com/.../20071085

Hi Shivendra,
I have some questions for clarifying:
1. How to add VMs, i.e. I mean as "Other device - SNMP" ?
2. If so, how these new discovered VMs will be displayed/related in "Virtual machines" of the ESX host they belong to?
3. Could VMs for ESX be added in a similar way as HyperV Host + Guests - SNMP +WMI" ?
To me seems to be logic/normal that once an ESX server is discovered and inventoried using a user with Administrator rights, the VMs guests to be automatically discovered.
So?
Thanks in advance and best regards,
Augustin.

Hi Augustin,
1. Yes, SNMP other devices would work
2. They will be displayed under a virtual machines sub node at the host where they are.
3. Yes, you can use ESXi , SNMP +WSMAN discovery method and put the VMs IPs along with ESXi host IP while discovery.

Hi Pupul,
I've tried ESXi , SNMP +WSMAN discovery but all type of the systems in the range were discovered and VMs were not added under Virtual machines.
Using "Other devices - SNMP" it's not OK from my point of view, because this assumes that for all VMs SNMP should be configured individually. Having dozens of VMs....
Thanks and kind regards,
Augustin.

Hi Augustin,
To say the least, at this point it is needed for VMs to be configured with SNMP and discovered along with the host. We understand your situation and will try to enhance this feature going forward.

Hi Pupul,
Yes, you're right. I've already used this tool.
But, still it's let's say manually done, and I take into consideration that the number of guests increases over the time.
Every time a new guest is deployed, then configure SNMP...
My expectation was, guests to be discovered automatically via host using refresh discovery/inventory...
Thanks and kind regards,
Augustin.

Hi Augustin,
The correlation of a VM with its ESXi host is on the basis on MAC address and other details that we get from the VM. For that, SNMP needs to be enabled on the VM. You should be able to use SNMP tool to enable SNMP on all the VMs instead of trying to do it manually.
The SNMP tool is available at en.community.dell.com/.../20097170.aspx

Hi Augustin,
The current feature set in OME does not support discovery of VMs through host. Each device is considered separately and accordingly they are mapped to hosts if found to be a VM, VMs being considered as one of the devices under an ESXi or HyperV host need a protocol to provide some data.
That said, we will look at improving this behavior. Please keep these inputs coming.

Hi Pupul,
Thanks for your additional notes.
I have no possibility in my company's IT environment to test it for HyperV .
It would be interesting to see how it looks like for a host added as "HyperV Host + Guests - SNMP + WMI"
Just to be able to compare...
Best regards,
Augustin.
