OME Repository and Remote Database Server
Do we need a local repository when using OpenManage Essentials? When I go to the Catalog Source and choose ftp://ftp.dell.com/catalog/catalog.cab does that mean I'm downloading the latest firmware and drivers straight from Dell? If so why do I need a local repository?
Also how do I see what the remote database server is? I know we have an OME DB server but I don't see where in OME it references what database server it's connected to.

Hi Mike,
It is not necessary to have a local repository when using OpenManage Essentials. Once you select the FTP option, you get the latest firmwares and drivers directly from dell. Local repository is an alternative in case you do not want to download the firmwares from FTP every time or you do not want to connect to the internet.
You can find your remote database server from the registry details:
You launch Regedit >> HKLM >> Wow6432node >> Dell Computer Corporation >> Dell OpenManage Essentilals >> Database
In "database", the value under "server" is the name of your remote database

Thank-you Sir, I have a couple repository related questions. If we did choose the FTP option what are the mechanic's for OME on storing firmware and drivers for use again. Say we need the same firmware for another system update or later need to update many systems. Does OME store the firmware and drivers locally to be available for future system updates?
Also, if we prefer to use a local repository where is it recommended that we store them, on the application server or the database server?
We have (Server) Dell Repository Manager v1.4.113 installed on our 2008 R2 OME DB server and the repository download failed with the following error "Dell Repository Manager has encountered an error and cannot recover. Please restart Dell repository Manager." I saw another article that states to delete "Video_Driver_FRYX9_WN32_4.0.1.4_A00.EXE" from the local dell online catalog. Although I found that video driver and deleted it from our repository we still get the error message. I tried upgrading to 1.8 but got the message that .NET Framework needs to be installed. I could look into installing this during our next maintenance window ...

Hi,
Once you choose FTP and create a system update task, OpenManage Essentials downloads the package under System Update folder and keeps it there for next use if another system update task needs the same package. If another package needed for another system update task then it is again downloaded from FTP.
If you are creating a local repository, it is recommended that you create it on the same machine where OpenManage Essentials is installed.
The next question for the failure you are facing is "From where are you trying to create the repository, is it an FTP source?" Let me check what more i can get about this error.

Hi there,
Right, so RM will let a customer define it's own corporate level of compliance based on f/w and driver versions that _they_ certify and test for their own systems. You can kind of slice and dice your own.
There should be a Repository Manager white paper on www.delltechcenter.com/ome that talks about some of these differences. And this link here as well:
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/w/wiki/1767.dell-repository-manager.aspx
So you have another software tool to monitor health....right so if you discover your iDrac6/7 with WSMan, you should get lots of inventory info useful for asset management. You can also update BIOS/FW this way if you like.
Regards,
Rob

This is a great thread thanks for asking Mike, I had the same questions this morning.
If I may add a few discussion points for my own selfish edification:
