OME and Command Monitor - Linux not reporting
Hi There,
I've set up a secure environment of Linux and Windows systems and I'm trying to deploy OME and Command | Monitor to replace physical inventories in the future. I've got the following blend of Dell servers and workstations below:
PowerEdge R530 running Server2012R2
PowerEdge R730 running Server2012R2
PowerEdge R730 running Rhel7
Precision T7910 running RHEL7
Precision T3620 running Windows 10
2 N3024P switches
Currently, I have command monitor successfully installed on the Windows 10 systems reporting successfully to OME on Server 2012. I've installed command-monitor and it's dependencies on one of the RHEL7 workstations but nothing (besides hostname and NIC info) is coming up in OME when I do a search/inventory.
omid.service is running, firewalld is off, not using SELinux or anything. Any other ideas why my Linux machine isn't reporting to OME?
Also, was OME and Command | Monitor the correct choice for my setup? I just realized that command monitor won't install on the servers so I'll have to go a different route to pull that info (iDRAC?). I want to make I'm spinning my wheels for nothing. Thanks in advance!

Hi, thanks for the query.
Dell Command | Monitor is meant for client systems, and more information how to use it for management in OME is available in below white paper:
https://downloads.dell.com/solutions/general-solution-resources/White%20Papers/Dell%20OpenManage%20Essentials%20Client%20Support.pdf
There are two options to work with servers in OME. One is through iDRAC (recommended) where you can discover them using WSMAN protocol. Second one is agent (OpenManage Server Administrator) based in-band discovery, preferably using SNMP protocol.

Thank you for this document, Shivendra. I am having some of the same issues with the Command-Monitor for Linux not working as 383307, even with firewall and SELINUX turned off.
Regarding the document you shared, I note that the publication date on that is 2014, and refers to Linux only on page 6, this:
"Note: Dell Clients with Linux kernels/Operating systems are not supported by OpenManage Essentials."
However, in the 3-4 years since publication of that document, Dell has produced versions of Command-Monitor for Linux (RHEL 6 & 7) clients (currently on command-monitor client version 10.0.x). Because of that, I would expect that I could now use the Command-Monitor with the Linux kernel machines.
I would also expect this new client agent to do the same thing as its Windows counterpart, including letting the client be "discoverable" and reporting detailed inventory and health status to Dell Open Manage Essentials (DOME). However, that is just not the case. My Windows workstation clients are reporting, the Linux clients are not. The Linux clients are discoverable by DOME, but not reporting inventory or status to DOME.
This contrasts with the Linux systems I have that use the OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) client now at version 9.1.x. Those systems report just fine. Inventory appears, health reports update, all good. With Command-Monitor, only the basic info appears in DOME. All command-monitor systems were installed per Dell documentation, without issues, and show the services running. (https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/04/command-monitor-v10.0/dcm_ig_10.0/installing-dell-command--monitor-using-rpm-package?guid=guid-af48f4fb-20f5-477e-845d-fa4fe5933bec&lang=en-us)
I would expect the Windows clients to use WMI and the Linux clients to use SNMP based on what I am reading.
Does the new Linux Command-Monitor client install with SNMP enabled, or is there an installation flag for that?

There is difference between support available for servers vs clients in OME, and that whitepaper lists out the scope of support available for clients. I understand your point of Linux working similar to Windows counterparts, but at this point that combination is unverified/unsupported.
To your below question:
Does the new Linux Command-Monitor client install with SNMP enabled, or is there an installation flag for that?
