OME 2.1 - Cannot Associate iDrac Devices With Host Names

Hi,

I have recently installed OME 2.1 as part of a process to improve management and tracking of our Dell servers and also to provide up-to-date and reliable data for our CMDB.  The servers are gens 11-13 and iDracs correspondingly are 6-8.  Each runs either Windows (2008r2 / 2012), Linux (Centos / RHE) or ESX for an OS.  All have OMSA running.

Discovery and Inventory (using WS-Man) works fine on the iDracs, but the Host name of the server itself is not included in the data returned.   My question is how can I get the host name returned as part of this information.  I'm happy for OME to show the DNS name of the iDrac, I'd just like it to also return the server host name as a field in one of the tables.

I have looked at using SNMP for discovery of the servers but v2 is non-compliant in our environment.  Is there any other way I can use OME to get this information, or an alternative product that can?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

OME currently fetches the details of iDRACs and servers separately. There is no column which will populate the hostname of server by only discovering the iDRAC. Although, it is possible to get that detail when you discover the OS IP address. The device name of the server in device tree will be the DNS name of the OS and i am hoping it should solve what you are looking for. Since, you have OMSA installed in the servers, it should not be a problem for you and you should be able to query the OS IP using SNMP.

Let us know if this helps.

Hi Pupul,

Thanks for the response - just to clarify, I cannot use SNMPv2 due to compliance requirements (this is unfortunately non-negotiable because it is a company-wide policy decision).  Is there a process using SNMPv3 (or another secure protocol) that you could direct me to? I have tried using SNMP, WMI and SSH to discover the servers, but all I get is an unknown device with only the host name and IP address.

My problem remains the same - I can get all the details I need for the servers using the iDRAC WS-MAN discovery except the NIC IP addresses and the server hostname, which are the only two pieces of information the Server discovery returns (presumably from DNS).  I just need some way of associating the data returned by the iDRAC with the actual servers!

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the details. As you mentioned that you cannot use SNMP v2 as per the policy in your environment, but have OMSA installed on servers running Windows, Linux, ESX.

In this case you can still discover the Servers with in-band IP using WMI (Windows), SSH (Linux) and WS-Man (ESX) protocols (you can discover with these protocols even in case OMSA is not running on the servers).

Even after using these protocols, your servers are going unknown in OME, I will suggest running WMI (Windows OS IP), SSH (Linux OS IP), WSMAN (ESX OS IP) protocols using Troubleshooting tool installed along with OME and see if it provides you any pointers.

Pl. keep us posted if it helps.

Thanks,
Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Thanks for that.  I have tried using WMI to discover and inventory an R730xd running Windows 2012, but it still returns only the device name and the IP address.  When I run the troubleshooter using the same credentials on the same IP it gives me 2 MAC addresses, then Windows NameSpace, Dell Server Agent NameSpace, Dell Client Agent (DCM) NameSpace and IPMI NameSpace all show as present.  Yet still I get an unknown device with no details in OME when I run an inventory.  Is there anything else I can check?

Thanks,

Tom
