OMCI Health Monitoring on Optiplex?
Hi!
We were planning to buy multiple Optiplex 9020 MT. Regarding basic health monitoring I have found the following document:
On the last page of this "Monitoring Hardware Health for Dell Client Systems using Dell OMCI" White Paper there is a support matrix which shows that on Optiplex desktop systems neither fans, not temperature, nor voltage can be monitored. This means that there is no real health monitoring for those systems available. Is this still the case?

Hi there and thanks for the post.
No, you _do_ get health monitoring via OMCI on those devices. It is the _rollup_ or overall health. But we do not show you the fan, temp, etc.
Hope this helps,
Rob

Rob,
Thank you very much for the quick reply. So do I understand correctly that fan, temperature, etc. are actually monitored but I only see something like a red / green indicator showing if overall health is ok or not? If something is wrong, how can I actually determine which component caused the hardware problem?
According to other posts in the forum OME can be also installed on Non-Dell servers to monitor Dell Optiplex Clients, is this still correct? Also, can OME be configured to send out e-mails if some client hardware (fan, temperature) has failed or do I need to look at the console?
And one last question: Does OMCI require vPro to be enabled or is it independent of vPro alerts?
I hope these were not too many questions... Thank you in advance.

Hi there,
Yes, so red/yellow should cover the things like fan, temp.
You can click on the log tab to pull the logs. That should give you more detail.
I'm not sure about installing OME on non-Dell servers. There may be posts on this, but I guess it is unsupported. You can also install it in a VM if that helps. Yes, you can use OME to monitor Optis.
Yes, you can configure alerts in OME to send an email. But since you don't have SNMP traps with client devices, you need to set up the alert against the state change alert. You may need to enable the state change alert in preferences (can't recall the exact name). The whitepaper has an example of this I think. Let me know if you can't find it.
Not positive on the vPro question. I think not required, but not positive.

Rob,
If running OME in a Win Server 2012 R2 VM is possible, this should be perfect.
Thank you very much again. This information is really helpful. Unfortunately, Dell ProSupport is very bad here in Germany, I have to explain basic things to them.
Best regards,
Anguel

Update: Turns out that dell OME 1.2 still does NOT support Windows Server 2012 R2.
OME system requirements on the server are too heavy to have some simple monitoring of the OptiPlex clients. Will have to seriously reconsider if it is worth it...
Are there any plans to include simple E-Mail Alerts in the Dell OMCI Agent? I think some competitors offer such solutions so you don't have to install some heavy-weight server software.

Right...support for installing OME on Windows 2012 R2 is planned as a feature for v1.3 (days away!)
BTW, for 1.3, I can't recall for sure, but it is _possible_ that the OS block on Win 7/8 is gone. This may allow you to install on Win 7 and give it a try. Though it is not an officially supported configuration and it won't be mentioned in the support matrix doc. There was some discussion to unblock this to allow people to evaluate OME in a small setup/environment. I can't remember if it made it into the release or not.
That said, you will still need to review the memory and number of core requirements in the readme and make sure that still is met.
