No alerts from Precision workstation with SNMP/OMCI to OME

Hi,

First question for this forum.

I've enabled SNMP on a Precision workstation (T3500) running Win7Pro. I've assigned it a unique community name and set the SNMP service to accept SNMP packets from the OME server. I've configured the trap settings to send traps to the OMS server using the unique community name. I've disabled the send authentication trap setting. I can use the Dell Troubleshooting tool to query SNMP and WMI connection from the OME server to the Precision workstation. I've installed OMCI 8.2 on the Workstation and I enabled SNMP during the installation. I checked the Event Log and I can see OMCI messages reporting a failed drive in the RAID mirror (that's true), but no traps are reporting the OME server. I've gone through the OME Tutorial section and still I can't get this work. Any ideas on what I've missed?

Hi, thanks for the query.

OMCI does not have the capability to report errors through SNMP traps. There is an updated version of this tool available today known as Dell Command Monitor (v9.1 is the latest), which is capable of doing this. Please refer the TechCenter page mentioned below to know more about DCM and install instructions.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the help. I went with OMCI because there was a reported problem with AMD video cards and Dell Command and Monitor. All our Precision workstations have AMD FirePro cards. Since, there was a recent post (May 17, 2016) asking if this issue has been corrected, I'm assuming the issue still exists. I'll pick a less critical workstation and test DCM and let you know if I get hit by the same problem.

Regards,

Derrick.

Hi,

I've loaded the latest DCM using the custom option to install SNMP support, however still traps do not appear in OME. I tested this further with iReasoning MIB Browser. I was able to load the 10909 MIB and browse all the SNMP values from the workstation, however when I tried out the traps, it appeared that no traps were showing up in the MIB Browser. I went back the client workstation to double-check the SNMP service settings and all seems correct. I still have the "Send Authentication Trap" deselected, but I'm not sure that setting is valid for DCM.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Derrick.

Hi Derrick,

The DCM MIB has plenty of traps defined, I am adding a snapshot using iReasoning MIB Browser for your reference. Also, make sure there is no firewall programmed on OME server which might be blocking the traps from your client targets (does your OME setup receive traps from other device types which you might be monitoring?).

Hello,

I found that the OME server's FW was not letting the traps through by shutting it off temporarily, even though it appeared to be configured correctly, our network administrator determined this and he had to create a second SNMP TRAPS rule for the FW. This seemed to correct the MIB Browser as it was showing traps being collected. I shut off MIB Browser and then checked OME, but the alerts were still not showing up in the Alerts tab for the workstation. I tried the Dell Troubleshoot Tool and it was capturing traps, so I restarted the DSM Essentials services on the OME server and now OME is collecting alerts.

Thanks for your help!

Derrick.
