iRACS disappearing from Devices list

Hello, I am pretty new to OME and its idiosyncrasies. I am running OME v2.0 and seeing a strange thing in the Manage > Devices screen where devices are disappearing.

I have an iDrac to which I have created an A record in DNS.

I created a new discovery range folder in the Discovery and Inventory tab that has SNMP and WS-MAN enabled. I created a new discovery range within my new folder where I added the iDrac's DNS name. After running an discovery & inventory, it appears in devices as an unknown device.

I ran the Dell Troubleshooting Tool (v3.4.0) and it showed that the SNMP public trap was not enable on the iDrac (WS-MAN worked a treat). I enabled SNMP on the iDrac but when I ran another inventory, it disappeared from OME > Manage > Devices. If I disable SNMP from the iDrac then run the inventory again, it appears again.

1st, why is this happening? Where does it go? 2nd, how do I get the iDrac in devices without it being unknown. Which I presume is possible.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

John

Hi  John,

The iDRACs dont disappear when you have the server already discovered, rather the data of iDRAC and server correlates. The entry that you see under server, the same should be replicated under RAC as well. You will not see a separate individual entry for RAC separately, instead it will be a replcated entry of what you see under servers in the RAC group. If that is what is happening then its all good.

Hello John

Are you sure the community strings are the same on OME and the iDRAC? What does the troubleshooting tool report when you have SNMP enabled on the iDRAC? Also, what generation servers are these?

There is not a lot involved with discovery and inventory. If discovery and inventory is not working then it is usually something simple like a community string or user name being incorrect. Issues beyond that are usually network/firewall related.

If all of those settings look correct then I would suggest restarting the iDRAC(racadm racreset) and OME. If you go to Preferences>Console Settings there is an option to Restart Services. Here is a good document to reference for OME configuration:

Thanks

Hello Daniel

Many thanks for your reply.

I'm using the public SNMP community string which is the same for the iDrac and OME. I should say that I am using a special user on the iDRac which is not root, only an operator- is this significant?

When I use the troubleshooting tool and test SNMP, it reports an incorrect MIB-II (System Name - how does one change that?), the DRAC inband (Product Name = iDRAC 6) and FluidFS (Cluster name = Euro symbol).

It is a Generation 11 PowerEdge R710 server.

I realise that D&I is a simple task and the iDrac was discovered, inventoried and put into the Devices Tree. The bit I don't understand is when it disappears from the Devices Tree.

I will look into racadm racreset (soft?). I have reset the OME services from the OME website with no change.

Thank you for the white paper, I will read it again.

Kind regards and thanks again

I don't think that should be an issue.

it reports an incorrect MIB-II (System Name - how does one change that?), the DRAC inband (Product Name = iDRAC 6) and FluidFS (Cluster name = Euro symbol).

The system name should be iDRAC-Servicetag. I'm not sure if you can change the way it displays through the SNMP test. You should be able to change how it is displayed in OME though:

The bit I don't understand is when it disappears from the Devices Tree.

It appears to be running the inventory again and resdiscovering, but then it is having issues getting the data so it is removing the entry and being unable to input it again. There are issues reported when using more than one discovery method simultaneously. I suggest reading through this to see if it helps:

Hello Daniel

Thanks for your persistence with this. I believe my problem is that it is an iDRAC 6 card. I have other servers that that have iDrac 7 cards and show up in OME perfectly. I also have servers with iDrac 6 cards that don't. Updating the firmware to v1.98 (Build 08) doesn't seem to help.

Thank you for that link, I hope it will help me fix this.

Thanks again for all your help

John

The iDracs were disappearing because the server was already in OME - you can't have both. Simple when you know.
