Does my OME server need to be able to PING the servers it needs to manage?

Does my OME server need to be able to PING the servers it needs to manage? PING maybe locked down and wondered what my options are?

Yes it does, that is the discovery, without it OME won't find any devices.

No other way round it? What if it can PING the DRAC cards instead?

Reiterating to make sure I understand this correctly:

There is a Server whose host IP you cannot PING from OME, but still you can PING the iDRAC IP of that server from OME.

If the above is correct, the answer is: Yes, you can discover that server with iDRAC IP and WSMAN is the preferred protocol to discover the server using its iDRAC IP (out-of-band).

Let us know if this helps or our understanding of your problem is not correct.

Thanks,
Vijay

Firstly thanks for replying, I am only just learning the product.

Yes the OME server can only ping the iDRAC internal IP address of all the servers I want to monitor. Is that OK?

Do you have any links on setting this up with WSMAN?

Also some servers are Linux so Server administrator will not be installed, what is the alternative for this situation?

Thanks!

Hi Mark,

The best way to start using OME is to discover and inventory the iDRAC's. This is easily setup.

  1. Create a discovery range for your iDRAC IP's
  2. Select the correct protocol
  3. Fill in the credentials for the iDRAC (default user: root) (default password: calvin)
  4. Run the discovery and inventory and you are done.

Here is an overview of the recommended protocols per device.

If you want to inventory the OS I would always recommend to install OMSA, otherwise it doesn't really add that much of info over the iDRAC inventory.

OMSA is also available for Linux.

OMSA v8.2 Download

OMSA v8.2 can be downloaded from the following links. Please refer Server Administrator Installation Guideand Support Matrix to install these packages on the supported operating system.

Windows:

Linux:

ESXi VIB:

To use the ESXi VIB with VMWare vSphere application, you can utilize the packages from Dell VMWare depot.

Thank you very much.

I have one server looking fine, showing as Green on the home page etc. I also did a discovery and Inventory of the OME server (it'self) but it's showing as Unclassified with no inventory information. Any ideas why?

Is it a virtual machine, because those are always an unknow status because there is no physical hardware state available.
