Discover and inventory M1000e with openmanage essentials 2.1

I have open management essentials and CMC for M1000e on the same network. In the discovery wizard I select CMC Discovery WS-MAN and provide by admin credentials for CMC. CMC is showing as unknown in the device and also health status shows the question mark sign

Hi,

What is the firmware version on M1000E? Make sure the firmware version of CMC is latest to be discovered through WSMAN. For older versions only SNMP is supported.

Chassis Management Controller (CMC) Version 4.45

Also do you need snmp opened or just port 443 is open need for OME ?. Do I need to do anything on the idrac configuration  for servers and M1000e?

Hi,

So CMC version 4.45 is not good to discover the M1000E chassis using WSMAN. Can you run WSMAN test through troubleshooting tool which gets installed with OME against this chassis IP and check if you are able to connect?

For all the port configurations related to individual protocol, you can go through the support documents present at www.dell.com/.../manuals

yeah i can connect. This is the result of troubleshooting tool

Protocols Selected are:
  1. WSMAN
WSMAN
WSMAN Connected.
WSMAN profiles found on the remote device are:
1. Power Supply
2. Sensors
3. Base Metrics
4. Physical Asset
5. Base Server
6. Power State Management
7. Power Topology
8. Power Allocation
9. Service Processor
10. Boot Control
11. Simple Identity Management
12. Role Based Authorization
13. Active Directory Client
14. Modular System
15. Record Log
16. Simple NIC

Ok, does your discovery wizard have WSMan and only WSMan selected?  And the checkboxes on that page are all checked?

Thanks,

Rob

is upgrading CMC disruptive to blades and storage running ?

For M1000e. Just WSMAN

Thanks for the information.

Can you try one more thing from the system where you have installed OpenManage Essentials for us to drill down into the problem:

- Run the following winrm command replacing the ipaddress/credentials of the CMC you are trying to discovery via OME:

winrm e cimv2/root/dell/cmc/DCIM_ModularChassisView  -u: -p: -SkipCNcheck -SkipCAcheck -encoding:utf-8 -a:basic

Note: We support discovery of M1000E CMC via WSMAN from F/W version 5.0 and above.

Based on the above output, the CMC should be classified properly without upgrading the CMC Firmware.

One last check (though they are default settings with OME 2.1):

- The checkboxes Secure mode, Skip Common name check, and Trusted site are checked on the Ws-Man configuration tab?

If yes to above, I will suggest to call support guys to have a closer look 800-945-3355 .

Thanks,
Vijay.

only WSMan

September 21st, 2015 16:00

enable WS-MAN Discovery

secure mode

skip common name check

trusted site

Have check box enabled

Thanks for the details of the ModularChassisView class. Looking above, it seems the firmware version of CMC is 4,45 and not 5.0.

    MgmtControllerFirmwareVersion = 4.45.A00.201307240137

So, you will be able to perform the discovery of M1000E using SNMP for this firmware version. Afterwards once you upgrade the CMC firmware to 5.0 or above, you can use WSMAN discovery. Hope this helps.

we have bunch or m620 and PSM4110 running on m1000e that are production. Updating CMC to 5.x will cause downtime ? Do we also need to update other components such as iKVM and IOM Firmware and Software ?? Downtime for updating other components ? Any compatibility issues ?

Hi,

For discovery/inventory of CMC via WSMAN only the CMC firmware need to be updated. Updating the CMC firmware only resets the CMC and takes few minutes to become up again. The servers are not rebooted if you update only CMC firmware. (Refer Updating CMC Firmware section - http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/dell-cmc-v5.0-m1000e_User's%20Guide_en-us.pdf)

But, before you proceed with CMC update, good to double check the certificate on the CMC is not expired (Refer http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/f/4494/p/19653767/20824350#20824350

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks,
Vijay
