Device groups OpenManage Essentials

hello ,

I have a question for i think the development team.

Here's the thing.

We have a lot of servers here and when i run a discovery and inventorie, all these servers will be placed in the folder RAC (we discover only by iDRAC).

Now i have created different groups to make it easier to work with, the problem is that i need to put them by hand in all these groups and then they still stay in the group RAC also.

So now you never know if you divided them all in the groups, there may slip one through and because the screen jumps to the selected group it's easy to make a mistake or forget some servers to replace.

Is it not possible to remove a server out of the primary discover group (RAC in our case) when it's moved to an other group so it will appear only once?

We are working with the latest OME version 2.1.0.2635

Hello,

I don't know the answer to that because we don't have any of these devices that needs discovering. What i do know is that the firmware needs to be pretty up to date for a correct discovery.

You can create your own groups and then right click on the the device with the unknown status and choose "Add to existing Group".

Don't know if this helps in anyway.

kind regards.

I unfortunately don't have an answer for you, but came here to ask something similar. I have some PDUs and UPSes that are being classified as Unknown devices. I'm hoping there's a way to force them into the correct groups.

Hi,

When you discover a device, the device gets classified under the respective predefined group in device tree automatically. It stays there till the time it is discoverable over multiple cycles. When you create a dynamic/static custom group, you can choose where to put that device as per your need.

There is no way to remove the discovered device from a predefined group. Though, you will still be able to hide the entire predefined group from UI if that helps you.

Hello Dell-pupul,

I've already created multiple device groups and put the devices in there, but when you have a lot of devices (over 350) it's a whole lot of work to put them in predefined groups. And when you did so there's no way of knowing if you have selected them all.

Thats why it seemes handy to me to move them instead of copy them into devices groups. In this way you will also be able to see if you've divided them all into the correct groups and it's easier to see the newly discovered ones because they will be placed in the predefined groups at first.

I asked this because we discover whole ip-ranges at once.

I don't think we are the only ones with this "problem" so perhaps it's something for a future release.

Thx for the reply.

Hi earconti,

Thanks for your query.

Please refer the device support white paper available at the below mentioned location to know more about the supported models, minimum firmware versions and discovery protocols required for proper classification of UPS and PDU in OME.

en.community.dell.com/.../20440872

If everything is proper with your target devices and still they are not classified properly in OME, please run "SNMP Test" using Dell Troubleshooting tool (which is installed along with OME) against them and share the results. Also, don't forget to mask any sensitive data they may have.
