Dell R350 decrease fan speed

I have a new server at customer side but this server is too noisy and rack is in the office.

I`ve tried to decrease fan spees via idrac9 (express) or OMSA but maximum which I can achieveis 50% speed.

My current settings ares, Thermal profile optimization is set to Sound Cap, Fan Speed Offset is OFF and Minimum Fan Speed is set to default.

Current fans speed are 48-50% (9-10k rpm) and this is too noisy.

Customer is very dissatisfied and I don`t know what can I do with this new server.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
Is the temperature in the room high(er)?
Do you have anything plugged in the PCI slot?

No there is no problem with temp in the office or rack.

CPU1 Temp is 33 C, system board exhaust temp 31, system board iniet temp 27, max dimm temp 29 (all temp are reading temp from idrac).

There is issue fan speed can be set under 50% and I don`t know why.

Hello,
a server, especially a rack version, is not made to be installed in an office, as it is noisy .
Have you updated iDRAC and BIOS?
I also recommend that you read this information regarding fans

No my question is, did you tried to update iDRAC firmware and BIOS? Which version are installed?

If you check this documentation pag 30 you have the server with category 3 acoustically usage.

It depends also about the configuration of the server. Anyway you can see that LpA value is 40 dB.

That can be ok for an noisy office but you can hear it if th office is really quiet.

This is 15th generation.

I tried idrac via bios too, there is limit 50% too.

I don`t agree with the regard because this server can be use in office too.

This is from technical guide:

Dell EMC PowerEdge R350 is a rack-mount server appropriate for attended data center environment. However, lower acoustical
output is attainable with proper hardware or software configurations. For example, the minimum configuration of R350 is quiet
enough for typical office environment.

and another citaion from this guide.

Table 20. Acoustical performance of R350 acoustical configurations

40dB in idle and 60dB in feature rich...sorry 40dB is noise from your fridge not from your compresor...because 9000rpm is noise like compresor.

Btw server config Xeon E-2314, 16GB RAM, 2xSSD a the only noise is made by system fans.

There is only one issue  stupid setup in 50% limit

I`am going to make upgrade (6.00.30.15 to 6.10.30.20) and we`ll see.

Mate I swear this noise from fans in 50% is really annoying and nobody would want to hear it in noisy or really quiet office;o).

Edit: As I feared no change with newest idrac fw...stil 50% barrier.

Ok I`ve tried to change fan speed via impitool but there is a problem with privileges.

Any hint guys?

PS C:\Program Files\Dell\SysMgt\OM_iDRACTools\IPMI> .\ipmitool -I wmi -H 192.168.1.63 -U root -P calvin raw 0x30 0x30 0x01 0x00
Unable to send RAW command (channel=0x0 netfn=0x30 lun=0x0 cmd=0x30 rsp=0xd4): Insufficient privilege level

Hello,

you can try setting the user privilege to level 4 which is Admin level and try the command again.

Unfortunately i didn't found any documentation, only this but it is related to another system

Dear Dell experts,

I am having the same problem on IDRAC 6.10.30.20 and the latest BIOS (1.6.3). The problem is that the minimum fan speed can't be set under 50%, and 50% is simply too noisy (65dB) directly near the server.

Your idea to set the privilege level to 4 is not helpful, the root user has already Administrator rights...

Please check your firmwares and publish a BIOS/IDRAC version where it is possible to set the minimum to 20% or something else where the noise level is not as loud as a mower in 10m distance, I don't understand why the server has to be this noisy, if the inlet temperature is low enough...

Kind regards,
Manuel

Hello thanks for choosing Dell. But I'm afraid there's nothing we can do basically at this point: you have updated your firmware, And 15G, the IPMI privilege has been revoked as well. We could wait to see what other contributors would think but I also doubt that what else would be avaialble. Sorry I couldn't be of help this time.

Code of Conduct. DELL-Admin>

R7415 (like others above) stripped rights to administrate after an update.

NO warning we'd be unable to modify fan levels from OBNOXIOUS. And it has absolutely NOTHING to do with temperature. Not a single sensor shows over 31-degrees and they're all at 10,000 rpm.

Making DELL WORTHLESS to ME & ~10% of users who USED to use them.

I'm informing AS MANY PEOPLE as I can. Warned all my clients who use servers in their office. Some revised their purchases. Others extended use nearing EOL. Others still switched to others.

I posted on all forums I'm a member of.

Had they made it a WARRANTY VOIDING OPTION even..? Or disallowed it during their warranty (until financial interest expires)..?

There'd at least be some basis to it. But this?

I hear some fan whining as being on behalf of Dell execs (if 3rd party SSD is used)

On the bright side, this message is making the rounds. Reddit ... YouTube ... TrueNAS ... all their forum sections cover this.

Hello I run my own data center with many Dell servers. I frequently set up servers at my office before I take it to be deployed at the data center. In all cases in the last 10 years the servers would make very loud noises on boot up. And then settle down and pretty much stay there. Rarely would it be high enough volume to be a bother in the office. In the case of this new R350 that I just purchased for a client, The noise level is way too high and would not be tolerated in any office environment. My client has a room for their server and it may be okay for them with the door closed. But I have other clients that would put these in closets next to work space. This server sounds like it is under stress with these fans going so fast. I can't imagine a data center full of these servers you would need serious ear protection just to go inside the data center.Hi, I operate my own data center consisting of numerous Dell servers. Typically, I configure servers at my office before deploying them to the data center. For the past decade, it's been common for these servers to produce significant noise during startup, before reaching a more tolerable level. Usually, the noise is not disruptive in an office setting. However, the new R350 I've acquired for a client is exceptionally noisy, unsuitable for most office environments. My client may find the noise level manageable in a dedicated server room with a closed door, but it’s impractical for others who might place these in closets adjacent to workspaces. The server seems stressed with the fans running at such high speeds, leading me to think that one would need serious ear protection in a data center filled with these units.

MikeBest73891765,

To start I would suggest that you make sure the server is current and up to date on the BIOS, iDrac, and controller. I suggest that as the iDrac is what controls the fans. Now if the server is up to date you can look at changing the settings under

F2 - System BIOS Settings - > System Profile Settings -> System Profile -> "Performance Per Watt (OS) "

or

Life Cycle Controller - > Select System Settings - > iDRAC Settings - > Thermal Category - > Change Thermal Profile to Minimum

Lastly, if the noise is a significant factor there's an option in iDRAC thermal called Sound Cap , which will allow you to reduce the acoustic output, but it will also reduce the performance because CPU can be throttled.

Let me know if this helps.
