Cannot discover devices
I've got OME 2.1.0 installed on my Windows 7 Pro laptop and a Dell 2950 running 2008R2 with all the prereqs installed. I've tried discovering this machine by snmp (following all the config instructions) and although the OME troubleshooting tools reports that all is working well, I simply cannot get OME to discover this server. Both the server and my laptop are on the same subnet. I've even gone so far as to turn off the Wirewall server and uninstall Symantec Endpoint protection and ....nothing. Any tips?

Hi Lee,
Thanks for your post!
Few things which we would like to understand before we try to solve your problem:
1. Hope i understood it correctly, you have installed OME on Windows 7 Pro laptop, is that correct? Actually, installing OME on Windows 7 is officially not supported but still you might see it working.
2. Are you managing Dell 2950 server via OME, if yes then you would need "Dell OpenManage Server Administrator" installed on it. If it is not installed i would recommend you to install it and then perform discovery using SNMP/WMI. Later, once you have OMSA installed on the server can you please run the connectivity test and share the output for troubleshooting tool(Troubleshooting Tool will be on your desktop where OME is installed).
Here is the whitepaper for "Discovery and Inventory of Dell devices using OpenManage Essentials"

Keep us posted!
Thanks

Hello Ranveer! Sorry for the delay in my reply. I ended up installing OME on a server and have been mostly successful in discovering our Dell Servers. One issue that has arisen is that of Domain Controllers. Is OME right for use with DCs? I found some older posts that suggested that it was not.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Lee,
Thanks for the updates and good to hear that things are working as you needed!
The support for installing OME on DCs was enabled from "OME1.2", so probably that post might be around when 1.2 was not released. So from OME1.2 onwards user can easily setup an OME on DCs with few steps to be followed, infact they are good to be reviewed before installing OME on DCs.
Refer to below whitepaper for "Installing OpenManage Essentials", (Page 16):
http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20440876
Note: The recommended minimum hardware requirements for OpenManage Essentials on a
domain controller are 8 GB RAM, 8 cores processor, and a remote database.
Hope this helps!
Thanks

Hello Again,
I now realize that my questions may have been misleading. I didn't want to run OME on a domain controller, I wanted to be able to inventory our DCs as clients of our OME server :)
While I can actually discover them, I can't inventory them. Is it necessary to have the very latest version of OMSA or should a 6.x version work as well?
TIA!

Ahh... this was actually tricky one but yeah thanks for the clarification :)
For inventory, you have mentioned that you "can't inventory them". Does that mean you want to perform inventory for the devices but it is not returning the data you are looking for? Or is it, inventory task is not giving any inventory tables\details at all?
And answer to your second part It is always recommended to have latest version of OMSA(i.e 8.x) because every new release has some or the other enhancements to it.
Keeps us posted!
Thanks

Alright, now we're in business. It does look like I needed to update OMSA. My domain controller is now showing up with the rest of the server.
Thanks again!
