512 devices discovered but only the network interfaces

G'Day all,

I have installed OME and it has now discovered 512 devices in our network, only 5 register as a DRAC of some kind the other 50+ servers dont appear? Is this normal?

Also, it appears to not support SNMP communities other than "public", we change our SNMP string to our company name on all devices so SNMP appears to be broken? Is there some kind of special configuration for it thats not on the SNMP discovery dialogs?

Thanks

Hi there Sid and thanks for the question.

Ok, so out of that 512 let's start to break that down so we can decide how best to manage your environment.

- If any of them are Printers, Network Tape, PowerConnect or Force 10 switches, and the like, you can use SNMP.  So maybe set up a discovery range for your simple SNMP devices....just a suggestion.

- For your servers, the recommended protocol kind of depends on what generation of PowerEdge server you have.  If it is pre-12G, it is best to use SNMP + OMSA on the box.  If it is a 12G server (e.g., R720, T620, etc.) you can discover it via WSMan to make it easy.

- Indeed, if you notice the text entry field for the SNMP comm string on the Discovery Wizard, you may note that it is editable.  So be sure to enter your specific community string or a comma separated list of comm strings.  Remember they are case sensitive.

- There is a Dell TroubleShooting tool installed on the OME desktop.  It can help you identify some problem you may have if the device does not properly classify.  For example, when you run the TT against a server (SNMP test), the result set must include the Server Administrator version or it won't be properly classified.

-Finally, there are some great whitepapers (e.g., Making My Environment Manageable....) on www.delltechcenter.com/ome.

Let's go from there,

Rob

Can confirm that SNMP isn't broken and WILL accept anything other than public. How are you discovering your stuff? One single discovery sweep or have you defined groups? Robs advice on protocols is a good starting point (you may want to have a read of my post: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/f/4494/t/19545296.aspx) Jeff
