3rd party snmp MIB file

Hi all,

i am trying to use third-party SNMP MIBs with Dell OpenManage Enterprise (4.5 build 34). The MIBs in question belong to the Scality RING SDS. The import of the MIB file inside OME works correctly, but every time I try to send test traps, OME always returns the erro: "unknown trap received with enterprise OID: bla bla bla..."

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

You’re not doing anything wrong. This is a product limitation in OME 4.5.

Dell OpenManage Enterprise does not support creating custom trap-based alert policies for third-party MIBs. The “Trap-Based Policy” option you mentioned is documented in older versions of Dell OpenManage Essentials, but it was removed in OME.

In OME 4.x:

  • You can import MIBs for reference and download them for external SNMP managers.
  • OME can forward traps to other systems (with normalized format).
  • But OME cannot interpret or classify third-party traps beyond “Unknown Trap” because there is no mechanism to map imported MIB OIDs to alert policies.

What You Can Do Instead

  • Use OME as a trap forwarder:
    • Go to Application Settings → Console → Trap Forwarding Format and set to Normalized.
    • Forward traps to an external SNMP manager (e.g., Scality monitoring or another NMS) that supports custom MIB interpretation.
  • For Dell devices, OME will classify traps correctly because they match built-in policies.

Hello,

This error occurs because OpenManage Enterprise (OME) does not automatically recognize traps from imported MIBs unless the trap definitions are mapped to alert policies. Importing the MIB file alone only loads the object identifiers (OIDs), but OME still needs to know how to interpret those traps.

Why “Unknown Trap” Happens

  • The enterprise OID in the trap is not associated with any alert rule in OME.
  • OME only processes traps that match its internal alert definitions or custom alert mappings

To fix it you can try:

Verify MIB Import

  • Go to Application Settings → SNMP → MIB Import and confirm the Scality MIB is listed.

Create Custom Alert Policy

  • Navigate to Alerts → Alert Policies → Add Policy.
  • Select Trap-Based Policy.
  • Enter the enterprise OID and trap OID from the Scality MIB.
  • Map it to an alert category and severity.

Test Trap Again

  • Send the trap from Scality or use a trap generator.
  • OME should now classify it under the custom policy instead of “unknown trap.”

Note:

To forward audit logs to an SNMP destination, set the trap-forwarding format to Normalized in the Console

Settings. See, 'Configure trap forwarding format' - page 78, in Manage console settings, page 75, for more details. Normalized trap forwarding is only for sending traps out of OME, not for interpreting incoming traps.

Download an OpenManage Enterprise MIB

Download OpenManage Enterprise MIBs to set up traps on the appliance. You can download only the OpenManage Enterprise related MIB files.

Steps

1. On the Monitor screen, click MIB.

2. Expand and select an OpenManage Enterprise MIB file, and then click Download MIB

@DELL-Charles R

Hi Charles,

thanks for the answer. I verified that the Scality MIBs are visible under Monitor > MIB > SCALITY-MIB. The problem is that in OME 4.5 I don't have the Trap-Based Policy section under Alerts > Alert Policies > create alert policy.

What am I doing wrong?
