Dell DDPE Encryption and Windows 10 Feature Update Path after 1703 -> 1709

Hi,

I am facing the following question:

In Order to perform an feature Upgrade you have to prepare some tool like statet here:

http://www.dell.com/support/article/de/de/dedhs1/sln298382/dell-encryption-for-windows-best-practices--windows-10-upgrade---migration?lang=en

But there it says that Windows 10 1709 is not supported yet. Is there a methode comming up to automaticly deploy new Windows 10 Feature Updates to Clients with Dell DDPE installed? Cause we have much to many clients for perfoming a decrypt/deinistall of DDPE7Feature Upgrade/Reinstall/rercypt every 6 month.

I am hoping you can help me

Hi n.wieqmann,

The 8.17 release of DDP|E that we released in late December will allow you to do a Windows 10 feature update to a supported Windows 10 build without having to do anything extra once the 8.17 agent is installed.  We're working on updating the KB you linked with this information but in the meantime you can download the latest agent at the below link.

Hi,

I get a warning which indicates I cannot upgrade to the Enterprise Edition but nor can I install Windows 1709 update nor can I simply uninstall DDPE?

Error: The Suite cannot be upgraded to Enterprise Edition?

Hi,

sorry for latre reply, but I had no time to test this till now.

The Feature upgrade does no longer require user interaction and start right away, that looked promising, unfortunately the feature upgrade did not work. After the first setp (first reboot) windows encountered a problem and reverted tho 1703. (Reverting was working OK, in previouse version reverting caused blue screen)

After I removed DDPE the Upgrade to 1709 worked, so I can confirm there is still a problem with 8.17

Maybe you have another advise :)

best regards

Niklas

hi eob_west,

it sounds like you are running Dell Endpoint Security Suite Enterprise. version 1.10, which is available in your download site at https://ddpe.credant.com should allow you to update to a supported version.

if you do not have access to your download site, please send me a Private Message and we can get this re-enabled for you!

Hi Niklas,

We have seen several issues with the Windows 10 Feature Update 1709 and installation with Dell Encryption. We have updated our Windows 10 Feature Update Best Practices for Dell Encryption page:

http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/sln298382

Previously with Feature Updates with Windows 10, a screen that mentioned that Dell Encryption would need to be uninstalled for the Feature Update to proceed would be prompted on the device. This was based off of the detection and the validation of the version of the Dell Encryption product. This seems to no longer be triggering properly from Microsoft, which we are researching currently with them.

in addition to the changes with the detection of Dell Encryption, Microsoft has introduced multiple new ways to update to Windows 10's latest feature updates. the most common of which is the Windows Update Assistant. Dell Encryption requires that our encryption drivers be present within the Windows 10 Feature Update process, which is done by a file called SetupConfig.ini, which is stored in C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WSUS\. Typically during a Windows Feature Update that is pulled through Windows Update, this file is opened and the information and commands contained within are ran against the Windows Update. The Windows Update assistant does not pull from this location during the update process, so we are not able to automatically import our drivers into the Feature Update's process.

Long story short, if we are updating through Windows Update, and we have confirmed that the Windows Update Assistant is not triggering, and we are still having failures, it is suggested to run wsprobe -z against the devices, then attempt the Windows 10 Feature Update.

If you still have isuses beyond this, i would recommend opening a ticket with our support queues so we can identify why the process is failing, and we can work torwards the best resolution possible for your environment.

I am still having the BSOD after a succesful update and running the wsprobe.exe -z.  Seems to install correctly and then it blue screens after the 2nd reboot.

Thanks.
