DD9500 Disk Absent

Hello,
I have disks 1.3 and 1.4 that have gone missing.
I changed the disks, but nothing, not even a blue light.
So dg0 is degraded and the array shuts down every 72 hours.
I am running version 6.1.
Do you have any ideas?

based on the very old and unsupported DDOS version, I reckon this is in no way supported by anyone, so not even by a 3rd party that only handles hardware support?

What would you be able to do besides maybe rebooting (or power down and up again) the unit and hoping for the best? Do the original drives work in other disk slots as that might point to an issue with the two disk slots. What was tested or ruled out?

With array shutting down you (only) mean the disk array (enclosure) that has these two possible affected drive slots? any more arrays that work fine? nothing reported by the array wrg to error states? what does cli say what the hardware status is from all components or what the alert messages are from the DD?

what state is shown for all disks? and their individual info?

disk show state
disk show hardware

what kinda enclosures?

enclosure show summary

Absent Disk State

The Absent disk state indicates that the disk is disconnected from the bus and is inaccessible, similar to a drive being physically removed from the system. Disks in this state cannot be failed or unfailed.

Actions to Take:
  1. Verify Disk Availability: Run the command disk show hardware. The output for the suspected drive should be blank or show as Absent.
  2. Reset Disk State:
    • Remove the disk.
    • Wait for five minutes.
    • Reinsert the disk.
    • After a system rescan, the output typically shows the disk state as Spare.

If the issue persists, there may be a problem with the slot on the enclosure or the head unit. In such cases, contact Data Domain Support for further assistance.

See also https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000043773/76684-disk-drive-in-failed-state?lang=en

which states amongst other things:

Replace the failed disk:

  1. See relevant documented disk replacement procedures
    • Tip: Best practice for replacing disk drives should include a one minute waiting period from the time a drive is removed until the new drive is inserted.
      • For example, remove the failed disk, wait one minute and then insert the new disk.
        • This allows the controller firmware to properly remove the old drive before the new drive is inserted, greatly reducing the possibility of a hotplug issue where the new drive is not properly recognized.
  2. Verify that the drive is in a SPARE state after replacement.
  • From DD-CLI # disk show state

So did you by any chance maybe replace the disks too fast with eachother?

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000021916/1004-disk-state-description

Absent A Disk removed or no communication to the inserted disk.
Common causes:
- Disk not firmly seated into slot
- Disk is not detected in DD OS (Data Domain Operating System)
- Faulty disk drive
- Problems with the disk drive controller or slot
ALWAYS allow (at least) 1 minute between removal and insertion of disks.
Possible troubleshooting steps:
  1. Reseat the disk.
  2. Rescan the disk slot: # disk rescan n.n
  3. Try a 'known-good' disk in the affected slot (for example A Spare from another slot)
  4. Power Cycle the slot (Power off system and attached storage OR Support can reset individual slots on external storage)
Ref KB: Resolving Disk in "absent" State

So the referenced https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000018774/71580-resolving-disk-in-absent-state above states also to look for Slot Disablement Alerts or Link Control Cards issues.

1. Interpret Results of the disk state

2. Verify Disk Location

  • If the absent disk is in the head unit, confirm it is installed in the correct slot per the model’s Install and Setup Guide.
  • Ensure that the disk is firmly and securely seated into its slot.

3. Check for Slot Disablement Alerts

Some of the steps above were filtered out like showing the disk state as step 1.

I assume you don't have access to any of the KB articles either?

Hi,
Yes, I have access to the knowledge base.
I have already followed these procedures, but the result is still the same.
The disks are still missing.
Is there a Linux layer solution outside of DDOS to check this?
Or is there a command to turn the port back on?
