Datadomain unexpectedly shut down

Hi @all

We have faced an unexpectedly shutdown of the datadomain 4500,  ddos version = 6.0.0.30-550720

Event Id:       EVT-ENVIRONMENT-00035

Event Message:  Critical failure caused an unexpected system shut down

Object:         Enclosure=1

Additional Information: Cause=Kernel Panic

Event Description:

A critical failure caused the system to unexpectedly shut down.

The system was able to boot successfully either because the fault was corrected, the fault was transient, or the system was able to boot without the component causing the fault.

any help :)

Thanks

running DDOS 6.0.0.30-550720? That is ancient, with an EOSS date 31 July 2020 for DDOS, while the DD4500 itself is EOSS since 31 Oct. 2022?

Wouldn't it be time to perform an DDOS upgrade? If not to the latest supported version, then maybe at least consider the latest 6.2.x version it would have still supported? The DDOS 6.2.1.90 release notes (Dec. 2022, so after the EOSS of the DD4500) already does not mention the DD4500 to be supported. DDOS 6.2.1.40 still supported it however:

Supported systems
DD OS 6.2.1.40 is supported on the following appliances and DDVE versions:
● Series: DD160, DD620, DD990, DD2200, DD2500, DD3300, DD4200, DD4500, DD6300, DD6800, DD7200, DD9300,DD9500, and DD9800
● Series with the Data Domain Extended Retention software option: DD990,DD4200, DD4500, DD6800, DD7200,
DD9300,DD9500, and DD9800
● Virtual Edition versions: DDVE 2.0 (RPM upgrade), DDVE 3.0 (RPM upgrade), DDVE 3.1 (RPM upgrade), and DDVE 4.0.

DDOS7.7.4.0 in October 2022 still mentioned the DD4500 to be supported as well:

DDOS 7.7.4.0 is supported on the following DD systems and DDVE versions:
● Systems: DD3300, DD4200, DD4500, DD6300, DD6400, DD6800, DD6900, DD7200, DD9300, DD9400, DD9500, DD9800,
and DD9900
NOTE: DD4200, DD4500, DD7200, and DD9500 may upgrade to 7.7.x from previous version. Fresh install to DDOS 7.7.x
is not supported for these systems.
● Virtual Edition versions: DDVE 4.0, DDVE 5.0, DDVE 6.0, and DDVE for DDOS 7.6 and 7.7

Update to 7.7.4.0 using the UI is only possible from the following releases: 6.0.2.70, 6.1.2.70, 6.2.1.x, 7.0.0.20, 7.1.0.20, 7.2.x, 7.3.x, 7.4.x, 7.5.x, and 7.6.x. Other releases must download the corresponding MDU bundle from the http://www.dell.com/support site before upgrading to 7.7.4.0 in one hop, and follow the update instructions as described in Updating to DDOS version 7.7.4.0.
● Upload the MDU bundle mdu-update-bundle-<version>-releases.rpm according to the version running on the
system. For example if the system is running 6.1.0.20, update mdu-bundle-6.1-releases.rpm. Upload the RPM to the
same location as that of a system RPM, /ddvar/releases/.
● Perform a system update with the MDU RPM, which should take a few minutes.
● After the MDU update is completed successfully, you can move on to complete the update to 7.7
The time for the update process to run depends on the platform and amount of data on the system.

So even though the DD4500 itself is no longer supported, you'd have some room to upgrade the system.
