Understanding Tiering in SC5020F

Hi Team

We have Dell SC5020F with only one Tier configured. All our 20 volumes are added to this Tier.

I am concerned about it showing free space of only 7.2 TB, with RAID 5-9,97% full and RAID 10, 31 % FULL.

I know we have much more storage on our system. Do we have to do any changes to the tiering settings, or if the space as and when getting used will automatically be added to Tire 1. Just not feeling comfortable seeing the RED and our monitoring tool raising the ticket.

Hello,

a SC5020F is supposed to have only TIER1 in most and maybe all cases because its a flash only system.

The allocation and shifting of resources around and between your two RAIDs will be done by SCOS in a completely automated manner. So using 9x% of all allocated storage is not something what you have to be worry about as long as you have free space within your TIER or/and  163.2TB completely unallocated (virgin) left.

Yes, i have seen in older SCOS versions that the system doesnt allocated existing storage for unknown reasons.

Yes, having a "red" bar and 9x% usage is normally something a admin raise a eyebrow but in the world of Compellent this is different

You can always open a support ticket and a secure shell because only Support should modify the page allocation.

Note: Your data reductions ratio looks "funny" because 1.31:1 is what i see on a lot of systems in total, especially on the smaller ones, but you have 90TB used data and DRE only reports 4.97TB saving which is pretty low.
Reasons: Not enough snapshots or just short time and the default settings that only frozen pages are compressed/dedup install of "all".

But with 160TB left youre not low on resources

Regards,
Joerg
