Storage tier setup question - SQL database

Hi,

We have purchased an SCv3020 with 30 x 1.8TB 10K SAS drive.

Right now we are using an EqualLogic SAN in our production environment with seperated volumes for standard data, SQL logs and SQL database with intensive access.

I would like to know what TIER and RAID configuration should we use on our new SAN to optimize our SQL access.

 Thank you!

Hello Yves786,

Here is a link to our best practices guide for running Microsoft SQL with an SC series system.  http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/extras/m/white_papers/20438053

Hi Sam,

With our new san Compellent SCv3020, we have only 10K SAS disk. Is it possible to setup more then one Tier in the Dell Storage Manager? We would like to have our SQL data/log in the Tier 1 (RAID 10) and our file server data in the Tier 3 (RAID5).

Also, is it possible to setup the disk space usage by Tier (ex : if we want to use 60% of the disk space for Tier1 and 40% for Tier3)?

Thank you!

Hello Yves,

Since you have only 10k disks you would only have 1 Tier, so the factory "Storage Profiles" would not apply to reach your goal.  You would need to create a custom Storage Profile to accomplish what you are looking to do. An example would be for your SQL Logs/DB, use "Write Tier- Tier 1 - Mirrored RAID 10"  and for "Snapshot Data - Tier 1 Snapshot RAID Type Mirrored RAID 10" this would peg everything to R10 on any volume you assign this profile.  Then for the file server Write Tier- Tier 1 - Parity (R5/R6)"  and for "Snapshot Data - Tier 1 Snapshot RAID Type Parity R5/6)" this would peg everything to parity RAID.

I hope this answers your question,

Dave

Hello Yves786,

Yes you can setup different storage Tiers on your SCv3020.  IT is best to use Tiers when you have different speed drives in your SC. You can still use storage tiers when you have the same disk types as well.  When you create the volumes you can select which storage profile that you want for each volume.  Here is a link to the Administrator guide & if you look on page 108 it explains how to configure a volume. http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/storage-sc2000_administrator-guide_en-us.pdf

No you can’t disk space usage by tier.
