Storage Manager VA 19.1.20.30 upgrade to 20.1.1.716 Failed

Hello;

We are updating to version 20.1.1.716 for 19.1.2.30 VA. After the update, we wait 15 minutes for the data collector service to restart. However, the data collector service is not running. We connect to the VA via SSH. We see errors like the one below.

Has anyone encountered this situation?

Youre not alone. I have around 2-3 DSM VAs which i cannot upgrade because of problems... but IIRC i got a big red error within the Unisphere GUI during the upgrade. But yes i can also see errors during boot/login screen if i remember correctly.

Dell Support doesnt like the VA as well and its very frustrating and time consuming to troubleshoot. As soon youre say that you using the inbuild Database youre alone in the dark.

One customer we have to migrate back to windows Datacollector and the other one we reinstall the VA in the latest version to "solve" the problem.

So if you have enough time try your luck with the support and please report

Joerg

Hello,

Unfortunately, I'd have to recommend a clean install. This can be a little easier if the system was working with an external DB, but not so much if it was set up with an internal flat-file.

If you contact support, there is a fair chance that a reinstallation would be the recommendation they make. They can look at it with you and may be able to suggest an alternative option, but I would expect a reinstallation recommendation to likely be on the table.

It's good to know that I'm not alone.  We planned to apply your method. We are also considering creating a record for support.

We will be sharing the results for you.

Hello;

Yes, we are using an internal database. It must be the same version to be able to migrate. On reinstallation we will need to add the existing SC5020s to the new Storage Manager VA clean install.Do you have any idea how our current live volume settings will react in a clean reinstallation.

The one installation we change back from VA to Windows(with MySQL backup) was a live volume setup.

Wiping a Datacollector and installing a fresh one and adding SC is not a big deal and doesnt effect the SC in general.

Even  when its a live volume setup!  There is only one thing.. you need to re adjust the Tiebreaker setting. Thats all.

Joerg
