Stopping I/O on SC3020 power off

We've been having power issues in our environment due to severe weather.  Our UPS can last over an hour but I'm having to come into work to turn off the VMs and host servers and SAN.

I'm working on documentation to identify processes for properly shutting down our environment (SAN included).  I have one question in regard to a previous post:  "https://www.dell.com/community/Compellent/Compellent-SC-shutdown-startup/m-p/5071355".  Dell-Sam L replied, "One thing that I would add is that you stop all I/O before you shutdown both controllers".

Is this an actual process or do they mean that, for example, in my case, just make sure all the VMs are powered off so there's no I/O activity, or is this a function inside of the DELL Storage Manager client?  I cannot find any other info on this.

Hello,

The storage should be the first thing to power on and the last thing to power off. What Sam was saying was simply to shut the VMs down first. Without seeing the full context of the quote, I'd modify that to simply that the data connection from VM to storage would need to be safely terminated on the VMs side, because the storage wouldn't be able to do that. This will also assure that when the VMs reach out for the necessary data, that it will already be up and available.
