SCv2020 Storage Profile Management with 1 Tier of Disks

Hello Community:

I need your help to undertand how storage profiles works in a SCv2020 array when it only have 1 tier of disks, in my case my array only have 7 hdd 900GB 10K.

I've done some tests on my array but, I didn't undertand if the changes have some effect.

By default the storage policy set on my array is Balanced, so, what benefit do I obtain working with this storage profile on the created LUNS?, what happens if I change to Maximize Performance or Maximize Efficiency?

Waiting for your response, gretings!!!!

The storage profiles specifies how the data is handle for that given volume when speaking about performance and or capacity.

If you choose "Balanced" than all writes goes into RAID10* and later**, when data is aged it moved into RAID5* for space efficiency

If you choose "Efficiency" all goes into a RAID5*

If you choose "Performance" all stay into a  RAID10*

You can change the profile type when ever you want. Yes also during run time and its transparent for the connected servers.
The system will start to move the data around but it can take some time and need some allocated space be available.

* If you you choose "Redudancy" for that given storage type its RAID10/RAID5 and when choosing "Dual Redundancy" its RAID10DM/RAID6.

** The system starts to move around the data when a snapshot is created. Even if your system is not licensed or you havent create a snapshot schedule the system will take a hidden snap at 7:00pm by default.

You can take a look to statistics in the hardware tab for every volume and see how the data is populated between the RAID types.

Joerg
