SCv2020 Factory reset - technical reference?
Hello!
I've recently acquired an SCv2020 storage unit and I am in the same situation. I wish to factory reset the hardware and have no knowledge of any previous setup that may have occurred on the unit. I find it rather frustrating that there doesn't appear to be any publicly available technical information on how to accomplish this.
I've decided to ask in this forum as a first step to try and make use of this hardware. So far, not impressed.

Hello,
Resetting any passwords would require you to contact support. If passwords are an issue, I'd begin there. As for resetting the controller to factory, what version of Dell Storage Manager are you running? Linked below are the steps to do this is 2019 R1 located in the manual.

When having phys. access to booted system you can bypass an unknown password by preparing a usb stick. After that you can query the system for IP addresses and Controller IDs.

I've been able to discover it via MAC address apparently. This wasn't succeeding the other night, but perhaps i wasn't using quite the right syntax for the MAC address entry.
Now to try and suss out what IPs its been configured with :-S... maybe check tables on the switch. Unsure. Wireshark is after that.

I absolutely have physical access to the hardware, and thanks for this bit of information. I believe I've read a post from you elsewhere on the forum discussing this very thing.
I should also have the (missing) DB9 to 3.5mm TRS console cable here any day now to start talking to the consoles of the units... but haven't found much information on that as of yet.
Cheers!

Thanks for the reply! I indeed have the 'Dell Storage Manager 2019 R1.20.
I've connected both the MGMT ports of the controller(s) to the same LAN segment, and powered the unit up. I've then waited and confirmed via the diagnostic LEDs that both controllers have posted properly (at least according to the documentation I've been able to find).
Regardless, I'm never able to discover any Storage Centers.

Welp....wireshark to the rescue. I now know the static IPs for the two controllers. Now to regain administrative access. I take it this is going to require the silly console cable?

Without the right serial cable you are not able to solve your problem. About the IPs... if youre watching a CM during boot you can see the IP address and other information for example.
About bypassing the password. It works for sure on SC4020 and i am pretty sure i have done it on another model as well but i cant remember if it was the SCv2020. Info: The username is hardcoded into SCOS and its named "Admin" with a uppercase 'A' and not "admin".

Joerg

It should work on SCv2020 as well. Take a look to https://www.dell.com/community/Compellent/Password-SC8000/td-p/7264398
It takes up to a minute until SCOS detects the USB and mounting it automatically. With the DSM Gui you should be able to login as "Admin" and password "mmm".
My first USB doesnt work and i need to use a older/smaller one. So dont use a 64GB or so.

I've tried this with a couple diff USB devices now. Used another BSD box here to create the required MBR, partition, filesystem, and unlock.phy file. Tried in both controllers. No dice.
Going to try an older version of DSM if I can get my hands on it. Tomorrow.
Wife is now pissed. SUppers ready.
