SC8000 Licensing rules for software features

Hi,  Can anyone help with the interpretation of the Drive licensing rules on an SC8000 for the software features.

My understanding was that once the array had 96 drives (any types) no further license packs were needed.

I was astounded to be told that it needs to be "Active drives" in the arrany and hence any hot spares any not counted.

I have not been able to find a definitive answer to this question and for me it it absolutely illogical that when buying an software extension pack for additional drives maybe some drives would not be covered.

Hello J-123,

If you have a license for X # of disks... you can have the X # plus the spare in the unit. This will cover the active disks and when one fails, the spare will become active and covered.  You will still have the same number of covered drives.  If you have any additional question about licensing then you can always email CML_LICENSING@Dell.com & they will be glad to assist you with any additional questions.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

What they refer to when they say spares are not counted is that the number of spares in your system are not coutned as active disks. For example, if you have 86 disks total in your system, and 4 of them are spares then you only have 82 that count towards your license. So if you are licensed for 88 disks total you can add 6 disks without needing to add a license. I would suggest you open a support case to have this verified based upon what your system license is currently to verify this information.
