SC3000 raid levels in one tier

Hi,

I have an SC3000 storage with only one tier with 7K disks. There are 2 raid levels in tier 1, raid 10-DM and raid 6-10.

I want to assign some volumes to use only raid 6-10, so I created a custom storage profile and I assigned two volumes to this profile.

The problem is that the allocated space for 10-DM is 35TB and for 6-10 only 1TB. So, 6-10 is full and there is no option to un-allocate space from 10-DM in order to be allocated in 6-10.

Do I miss something ?

I called Dell support and resolved the problem by pruning using ssh commands. There was nothing I could do from Storage Manager. We are also going to upgrade the firmware of the storage because they told me that the newer handles the space balancing better.

Hello apantz,

Looking at your picture you have no free unallocated space left on your SCv3000.  You can’t remove space from a volume after it has been created.  You will need either to add more space to your SCv3000, or you will need to backup all your data and remove the volumes, and then configure your volumes at the size u need, then restore the data.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

If this is a vSphere environment you can try to run an scsi unmap on each Datastore to free up some space.  If not check if you have replays around.

If you call dell support they can adjust the free blocks within the allocated space.

In the early days we have see this kind of problem in SCv2020 and SCOS 6.x

Regards,
Joerg

@Origin3kyes, it is a vSphere environment and I used unmap to free some space. It helps in order the storage not to get full. But do not give a solution to raid levels space allocation balancing problem. I think that I will call Dell.

@DELL-Sam LI don't want to remove space from a volume. I want to remove space from raid level 10-DM in order to give it to raid level 6-10. I tried to delete a volume and create a new one to raid 6-10 but this raid level do not increase more than 1Tb. It gets full and the rest of the data are written in raid 10-DM. I followed the procedure you proposed to this post: https://www.dell.com/community/Compellent/Can-we-shrink-RAID-10-DM-allocated-disk-space/m-p/6236927#M2634
