Reset SC4020

Hi guys, I would like to know how to reset the Dell SC4020, we acquired it from another company and wanted to use it in our environment, however when accessing the console it only indicates failure on some disks and keeps looping and restarting.Would there be any command to reset it to factory default?Yes, I know about the license issue, but I wanted to reset it anyway.

Hi,

You'll need to call support for a factory reset so they can grab the license along with important data before resetting.

Support is the only team that can reset the system because there are several steps that need to be done correctly to make sure all data is wiped out.

but I can give you some information, reminding you that the responsibility is yours.

SC Series: Recovering a Locked Admin Account

If you can't access any accounts because they're disabled or locked, here's how to get back in and reset passwords.

What You Need:

  • A USB drive with a partition table and one partition formatted as MSDOS/FAT32. Some USB drives come pre-formatted, but if yours doesn't, use Windows Disk Management or another tool to create the partition.

Steps:

  1. Create a text file with this line:

    unlock

Replace <username> with the Admin username. The Admin account is always on the system and has the necessary privileges to reset passwords.

Note: The user you're trying to unlock must exist and be enabled.

  2. Save the file as unlock.phy.

  3. Copy the file to your MSDOS/FAT32 formatted USB drive.

  4. Insert the USB drive into a port on the lead controller. Once the system recognizes the USB, System Manager will allow the specified account to log in.

  5. Log in to Dell Storage Manager Client using either the lead controller IP or the Management IP with the account specified on the USB drive. The password field can't be blank, but any text you enter will be ignored. For example, if the actual password is "mmm"

  6. Once you're in, reset the password for the account you used to log in:

    • Go to the Summary Tab and select Edit Settings.
    • On the left side, select Users and User Groups.
    • Highlight the user you used to gain access.
    • Select Change Password.
    • Enter anything in the Authorization Password field.
    • Enter your new password for the selected login.
  7. Remove the USB drive from the port.

If the password reset doesn't work, make sure you're using the lead controller. If it still doesn't work, check the USB formatting and try a different USB drive.

Note: This process was tested on SC40, SC8000, SC9000, SC4020, SC2020, SC2080 systems running 6.x, 7.1 – 7.3 using both DSM2106 and DSM 2018. It might not work on platforms using EHV, like SCv3000, SCv3020, SC5020, SC5020F, SC7020, and SC7020F.

Note: Portable Volume is unavailable during the recovery process.

Hope that helps!

For those looking for info like this... I figured out how to clear the existing config.

NOTE you must have an active license file tied to the array you are working on.  If you don't have this file DO NOT follow this set of steps, you will make your array useless.  If you are the owner of the array, even if it's not under warranty, you can ask Dell to generate a license file.

Here is what I did:

Connect using the console cable to the slave unit (usually the bottom controller)

Let unit boot

Log in using Admin account

run the following commands

>Shellaccess developer

>cs purge all

>disk global clobberall

>-reset    (note the command has a " -  " in front of the reset)

Connect using the console cable to the Main unit (usually the Top controller)

Log in using Admin account

run the following commands

>Shellaccess developer

>cs purge all

>disk global clobberall

>-reset    (note the command has a - in front of the reset)

Disregard any error messages about "downed disks".  For me at least, this worked when I rebooted the controllers.  The config, which is stored on multiple physical drives in the array were cleared.

When it reboots the config will be gone.  The controller IP address for the Main Controller previously set will be still In place (if you need to clear this there are other commands to run first before rebooting).  You will need to use the Storage Manager EXE program (this cannot be done from the web interface) to rebuild the config (although it can be done from the CLI).

The Admin password will be reset to "mmm".

Good luck.
