Online SCv3020 front-end upgrade - is possible?

The system: SCv3020 with FC front-end and actual firmware. Each controller has one extension slot free.

The goal is: add the iSCSI connectivity front-end card without storage service interruption.

The plan looks not hard technically:

- Check the FC multipathing;

- Shut down first sub-controller (via DSM or web-console), extract it, add iSCSI card (from Dell), plug the sub-controller in;

- Wait for first sub-controller to load and run FC sevice;

- Shut down second sub-controller, extract it, add iSCSI card, plug the sub-controller in;

- Wait for second sub-controller to load and run FC sevice;

- Check the FC multipathing and FE-port balancing;

- Proceed to iSCSI configuration.

The remaining questions:

I'm sure the 'big models' are able to continue to operate in such circumstances, but what about 'low-end models'? Is such operation supported?

Will the storage operate fine while the first sub-controller is already upgraded, but the second one - not?

May the storage require both controllers restart after both iSCSI cards have been installed?

Could the arguments not to do such operation (but completely switch the storage off for maintenance) exist?

Hi,

It would be recommended to have downtime and swap over both, but I don’t think it would hurt anything to try it this way, it just make not work until the controllers are rebooted.

Hi Josh

I have a similar upgrade and want to add FC frontend ports by removing extra iSCSI ports. In other words, I want to switch from iSCSI only system to FC + iSCSI. Is there anything I need to know other than steps mentioned in initial posts? One of support guys mentioned that someone from Dell need to type a command over serial connection if you switch a iSCSI only array to a hybrid one. But I couldn't find any doument or hint about it.

Thanks for your input. Your help is much appreciated.

Hello @LutfiYunusoglu,

Well, for me, the reason for you to contact Dell Support for this configuration is that it is a task that can cause issues if not handled right.

You need to consider if the switches are ready or not, if hosts have the MPIO correct. If everything else is ready, it would be enough with mapping the servers, but if not, there is some previous work.

Dell support will be able to guide you through the process and better know your needs and analyse what is required to perform this configuration.

Hope you find this information useful.

Regards.
