Multiple DSM Data Collector databases on same MS SQL server

I'm curious if multiple DSM/Data Collectors can point to the same MS SQL server using different databases?

The install of DSM, and even the reconfigure Change Data Collector Data Source, process does not allow the options to specify a database. What would happen if I installed a new DSM vm appliance and pointed it to an existing SQL server already running a data collector db?

The answer to your question is no. The Dell Storage Manager (DSM) Data Collector by default uses a database user named compmsauser, and a single database named compsadb. The database has a column in each table for the System Serial Number (SSN) of each controller. Because of this schema design there is no option to use different databases.

Thanks for the answer. This is really unfortunate and needs to be changed. Expecting customers to stand up multiple database servers is really just ridiculous.

There is no need to stand up multiple servers. Single Data Collector with a single database can manage, and collect data on multiple servers. I am aware of companies using a single Data Collector and managing/monitoring 20 systems.

The reason I ask is I was hoping to stand up a new 2018 appliance, with a new db hosted off the existing SQL server, and start collecting new data from the 8 arrays I'm currently managing with my 2016 DSM installed on Windows. I wanted to do instead of doing the "migration" process. I was thinking it would be less intrusive that way.

For companies that were managing multiple Data Collectors they had it installed on a server with a large amount of available memory. But you have 2 options.

Follow the steps on page 26 of the Storage Manager 2018 R1 Installation Guide under the section on Configuring the Storage Manager Virtual Appliance.

Or you could take your existing data and migrate it to the Virtual Appliance. Refer to page 27 of the Storage Manager 2018 R1 Installation Guide under the section on Migrating an Existing Data Collector to the Storage Manager Virtual Appliance.

Follow the Storage Manager Virtual Appliance Requirements on page 12 of the Storage Manager 2018 R1 Installation Guide
