Generating Emails from Compellent

I have been trying to configure our Data Collectors for our SC5020s to generate emails to a mailbox we setup in Exchange. Just a recap of what has been done:

1) A mailbox has been created with authentication within Exchange. The authentication comes from a username and password we created in AD.Connectors were setup with the virtual group IP, the Controller IPs, and the Data Collector IP.

2) I configured the SMTP setup on the data collector side with the email address and the username and password that is used to authenticate to that mailbox.

3) I have configured the SMTP settings in one of the storage centers of a SC5020. Within here, you can not put in credentials, only an email address.

4) After not succeeding in emailing a generated report, I started reading the Compellent administrator guide and noticed it speaks about setting up email configs in user preferences for the user account I use to log into data collector.

So my question is, Am I actually supposed to setup the mailbox authentication on the exchange side with the same username and password as the credentials I use to log into data collector? If this is not my problem, then I am looking for other ideas as to why I can not generate emails. Any assistance is appreciated. Thank you.

I believe the answer is yes it needs access for it to use exchange as the smtp server, but it can send mail to the mail account configured in the user config.

Thank you for replying, but let me just clarify my question a little more. Ive got two different credentials in play. The first set of credentials are credentials the exchange admin created that are currently used for the specific mailbox we setup to receive alert notifications. This credential is what I used to configure the SMTP settings under data collector environment. The second credential is the user account we use to log into the data collector itself. The Admin Guide seems to suggest utilizing the data collector user account to setup SMTP under User preferences, but its a bit unclear.

Do I need to make the exchange credentials the same as the data collector user account or should it still work if the SMTP credentials are different from the data collector user account? Thank you for the assistance.

Hello Scott.lakin,

The data collector is what needs to have access so that it can send the alerts.  So you will need to make sure that you use the data collector user account.
