Dell Storage Manager / Virtual Edition - customization?

Greetings to Everyone!

Customer asks me, is it possible to 'tweak' the DSM/VA (which is deployed and running) internal Linux due to following reasons:

- To integrate the threat protection / prevention (from McAfee, in my case) into VM (as they want to implement their corporate standards as full as possible);

- To update VM-Tools package, which is marked as 'outdated' now by VMWare monitoring.

As I see, the easy access to Linux shell from VM console and SSH is blocked. Does the way to achieve the 'goal' exist, or DSM/VE is a completely 'closed' solution, which is prohibited to modify?

Is the best solution in my case - stop to use DSM/VA, and deploy DSM Data Collector into self-prepared OS?

Cheers!

Hello polezhaevdmi,

You can’t tweak DSM/VA as it is a package that is preloaded on your Compellent before we ship it.  What you will need to do is to install the full version on a windows VM with MaCafee running on it and it will work.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I did not read the EULA but it is probably forbidden to modify the appilance. Anyway...it is possible because it is just an ordinary Linux VM. I installed nagios-nrpe-server to monitor the maschine and solve some problems on my own because the support for DSMVA is not very good. Greetings Leo
