Hello Dylan.

sorry for the late reply.

when we replaced the controller we replaced the cache battery as well

and it didnt initialize because the battery was still charging

when we put the new controller in and swapped to the old battery, the old battery charged a little

and the then the controller was initialized  and the error cleared.

the issue is resolved.

thank you and to @DiegoLopez  for the help!.

i have noticed that  although the beginning of the  dell part is the same (0W4TPR)

but the revision and p/n on it is different :

MY- 0W4TPR-63482 697-0s8e-A01

P/n : 1000803-05

and :

Dell P/n : MY-04WTPR-63482-617-Oc32-A00

P/n: 1000803-04

Hello,

Can you confirm that your replacement process followed the process in the link below? It's also worth noting that it may take 45 minutes to an hour for the software to update the new controller.

Let's give it a bit more time then and check back on it once it's had a bit longer to finish it's process. It may well be fine at this point, but we should know for certain before long.

the error that i received before replacing the controller :

an unrecoverable problem was found with caching hardware on controller during system startup.

the new controller is still not recognized in the Gui:

my question is this , is this the caching hardware  on the controller? :

Hello @lukehy

The error "an unrecoverable problem was found with caching hardware on controller during system startup" is normally related to a cache battery alert. Usually, when this error happens it is important to facilitate a serial connection to Dell Support level 2 for further troubleshooting because not always a controller replacement is required. Is your Compellent still in warranty?

If you followed the procedure for replacement, maybe the new Controller is faulty or the error was not related to a controller replacement. Can you try to install the old controller and verify if the error persist and the old controller is detected at all?

Regards.

Hello Diego.

i have put the old controller back and still got the the same issue .

about the new controllers , we tried a few of them but none of them
started to initialize.

this Scv2020 is not under warranty.

Hello,

The cache shouldn't be separate from the controller. With both the original and the replacement reporting this same error, the issue may be with the connecting board. The only components I'm seeing in our database are either controllers, hard drives, or SSDs. If you're still able to get into storage center or storage manager, I don't mind looking at a log collection, but you may be best served talking to phone support. The Compellent systems usually have support options, even with an expired warranty. If that log review is something you'd be interested in having done, go ahead and acquire them, then reply with the file size, so we can find the best way to get them. If you'd like to go ahead and speak with phone support, I'd refer you to (800) 456-3355. I expect that there is a decent chance that I may need to refer you to them, even with a log review, but I did want to offer.

Hello Dylan.

i think you misunderstood me , i was asking if that is the cache card in the photo.

steps of troubleshooting:

1.received the error

“An unrecoverable problem was found with caching hardware on controller  during system startup” (the controller still works with that error)

2. replaced the controller following the procedure - still it wasn't recognized/initialized
3. replaced with another controller that i had - still wasn't recognized/initialized
4. i matched the exact revision and p/n of the other controller  but replaced to a new cache battery
first  but when put the old working controller back it still didn't initialized so put the old cache battery
and the old controller started to initialize.
5. the next thing ill try is putting the new controller with the old battery and try to initialize it.

every time i replaced the controller and it wasn't initialized or recognized , i put the old controller back
the old controller is operational but still  got the error as mentioned above.

please let me know how to collect the log and i will send them to you for review.

thank you in advance.

My apologies, I wasn't being clear, let's back up a little. I was trying to say that I wasn't sure what the device in the image is. If you see a Dell part number listed on it, I should be able to identify it for us pretty quickly. The controller cache that I'm used to seeing isn't removable, so I wouldn't expect that to be cache, but I can't definitely state that what you have in the image isn't used for caching.

Health

What is the SCOS version of the controllers, and if possible, would you be able to message me the controller serial number? This number should be different to the numbers in your original post.

Storage Manager should still be available, the logs I was referencing are from there. They're exportable from  Data Collector > Health tab > Support tab > Gather Support Data.
