Dell SC Raid Configuration

Hi,

I am newbie on dell storage solution.

I have 2 tier storage (SC5020). First tier using SSD and second tier using HDD. We can configure type of redundancy for each tier, either single or dual redundancy. Single is combination of RAID 10 and 5. Dual is RAID 10DM and 6.

My question is

Can we specify RAID mix for each tier ? I want to use dual redundancy, but specify 80% for RAID 6 and 20% for RAID 10DM. Because my concern is capacity.

Thank you

Select a standard or customer Storage Profile to choose where to write your new writable data, or historical (Snapshot) data. By default The Storage Center will write data to Raid 10 or Raid 10DM. By default Snapshot data will go to Raid 5-5, 5-9. 6-6, or 6-10. Or you can create a customer Storage Profile on where to write your data. So how much data goes to Raid 10DM, or Raid 6-10 will be dependent upon on how much you write, and how much historical data you have.

So, how the storage center decide how much capacity in RAID 10DM and RAID 6 ? Does 50% 50% ?

Thank you

You cannot specify the amount of space in each Raid configuration. I think this document may be helpful for your question:

So, if i create storage profile that used only raid 6 and assign it to all of my volume, all of the data will be written to raid 6 ? So the usable capacity of the storage will be using raid 6, there is no capacity for raid 10DM. At the end, i have more capacity better than using default storage profile.

Hi, It seems you can not set the RAID mix ratio. Rgds,

Hi! Did you get an answer for your question? I'm facing with the same issue here https://www.dell.com/community/Compellent/Change-Storage-Policy-to-RAID6-only-but-still-RAID10/m-p/7278001/highlight/true#M2834 Regards, Damian

There will always be a small amount of data in Raid 10 DM. This is the configuration data that is stored on the disks for the system. It should be minimal. If Data-Reduction is used (Compression/Deduplication) it will use the Raid 10 DM space for the compression metatdata.

Dell Storage Center OS 7.0 Data Reduction with Deduplication and Compression
https://downloads.dell.com/solutions/storage-solution-resources/Data-Reduction-SCOS-7.0-Dell-EMC-2018-(2100-SB-SC).pdf
Page 6: A minimum of six managed SSD (flash) drives plus a hot spare are required. SSDs provide the read performance required for metadata generated by data deduplication.

Since your screen shot shows active volume space I would confirm that you have all Volumes set correctly. I would also verify you have the correct stripe width set. Refer to page 234 of the Dell Storage Manager 2018 Administrator's Guide
https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/dell-storage-manager_administrator-guide3_en-us.pdf

For the RAID 6 Stripe Width drop-down menu you should have the width set as 10 disks.

You mention this is an All Flash array. Is there only a single tier of disks?
