Dell Compellent Storage Center OS reinstall

Hello,

I've recently acquired a wiped Dell Compellent SCv2020 for use in my personal lab and am trying to reinstall the Storage Center OS. It seems the software was wiped as I'm getting the following error and it boot loops:

> All essential disks are missing, rebooting in 90 seconds unless disks are found.

I've tried to locate the software, but I'm guessing it's similar to the EqualLogic series where it's behind a paywall. The system is just out of warranty as of December 2020 so I don't have support and it seems I need to reup the warranty or pay $1500 for a support call to Dell to get the software. I'm hoping to just get the software as I'm capable or reinstalling it on the controllers myself going through previous Compellent upgrades at work.

Thank you,

Kyle

With no drives that are being seen the vault drives have been replaced more than likely. So you would need to call in and get the system registered to your  company, then if it is still supported we can assist in reimaging the system. but you will need a warranty in order for that to happen.
With no base image to start from, it means u need Compellent support to login & reload the image and licenses, which is why you need to have a warranty so they can transfer the licenses.
Let me know if this helps answer your question.

Hey Chris,

Thank you for your reply on my issue. I was able to use the Dell Digital locker to get the license files for the Compellent storage unit, though I could not find an iso file to reload the operating system. I reached out to support and they offered $1000 for 2 hours with an engineer or $3600 to renew the warranty which is understandable. However in my situation I'm using this for personal use and those costs are a bit out of reach for me at the moment. I'm hoping to find a way to get ahold of the ISO file to restore the SAN back to factory settings.

Best,

Kyle

Hi,

It seems that you found the previous thread post about a full reset, hence, I'll monitor this post and check back if you manage to reset using the steps provided by the user here: https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/compellent/reset-sc4020/67364ae73a370c473e429a71?commentId=67f13ba71f413b3c1a9f2041

Hello.

I Got An New unit This time. ( Well its used ) And the Last User of this unit did not Factory Restore this unit before Taking it out of Production. This means that`h i have no Admin to access this unit. But i Can access this unit via CLI.

Last Time i posted here on this Forum i had an Older unit who is now scrap sadly it too to mutch time but Ive managed to log into it back in April Before Scrapping it.

1: The New Used unit is an Dell SC4020 so this is a Bit different than the Old "scrap" Scv 3020.
But i need to Enter Safe Mode in Pre Boot In Cli. i Did this Last time so i think is Possible.
Ive Try`ed to Unlock The Admin Too Using USB Stick  Here is A Picture of the File Config.

I Think This Maby Wrong in something. (But there is so many People Who Comment to this online in This Jungle so its hard to Filter Out who is Right sometimes..)

2: I hope To Use this Unit in some kind of Something. But Ive have`d made up my mind yet.

First i want to Investigate To This Unit to Se if i can do Something to it.

3: I would Try Unlock one more Time whit USB is there an error in de Config ?

4: Is is Possible To change the IP Safe mode Boot ? Would be nice to Work Remote .

"Code"

Execute the following commands on each controller:

shellaccess developer

platform init hsn set 0
platform vpd set ssn=0
platform vpd set assetTag=0
cs purge all
disk global clobberall
platform bmc set source DHCP
-reset

Is This Advice able ?

i Got Nothing to Lose here I got no Data On Drives so i think if it Boot it Boots.

5: The Device is Out of Warranty so Calling Dell will Cost a Lot of Money. i Hope i can Figure out this With your help. And Maybe a Bit of Trying and Failing. And Maybe a Bit of Hope.

All Help Will Be Much Appreciated!

Hi,

Sounds like you're diving deep into this SC4020—nice work so far!

Just a few things to double-check on your USB unlock attempt:

  • File Name: Make sure the file is named exactly what the system expects—sometimes it's Unlock.phy, other times it might be unlock.txt, depending on the firmware version.
  • File Format: The content inside the file should follow the expected syntax. Some systems look for something like:
    unlock:Admin

or even a longer token string. Your current format might be too simple.
  • USB Format: Stick with FAT32 for formatting the USB drive.
  • Port & Timing: Plug the USB into the correct management port before powering on the unit.
  • Safe Mode Boot: You might need to interrupt the boot process to get into CLI safe mode. This is usually done via serial console access.

Hi,

The license file is kept at the owner's digital locker here: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-my/000131964/how-to-access-your-dell-digital-locker

You did mention that you purchase this from an user, hence, I would say the file is in their digital locker, unless you have already submitted the ownership transfer. https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-my/000125103/ownership-transfer-and-dell-product-registration-guides. To complete the ownership transfer, you will need to submit the original documentation and the previous owner details.
