Dell Compellent disk licensing?
We have a Dell Compellent (not sure exactly what Series, but it's a model EB-2425) that currently has 12 disks in it - 6 x 146 GB 15K RPM disks (one of which is a spare) and 6 x 1 TB 7K RPM disks (one of which is ALSO a spare). According to the dialog from "Help" > "Licensed Features", we are licensed for 16 disks, and currently have 10 "managed non-spares in use".
We would like to populate the remaining six drives allotted to us - can we just go out and... buy disks, and put them in there, and our licenses will transfer over? Do these licenses apply to any ol' disk, or are they size-specific? I'm assuming that I will have to buy Dell-branded disks?

Good morning,
What information are you looking for when you ask about the "kind" of drives and firmware? I can say that they're all SAS disks. Like Sam had mentioned, they're all going to need Compellent firmware. You'll need to contact sales for full details on part options for purchase. There are a lot of individual part numbers listed in the database and without knowing what information you're looking for, I'm not really sure how to answer your question.

Hello Master-None,
I am going to send you a private message and if you can send me your controller serial# then I can look and see which system you have. As a general rule with compellent systems you add drives 6 at a time. Based on your current setup you have 12 drives in your system, 10 data drives and 2 spare drives. I am guessing that you have a SCv3000 or 3020 but will need to get the serial# to confirm for sure.

Hello Master-None,
That is your serial# and it is coming back as an SC40. So you can add drives to your system but you will need to make sure that the drives have compellent firmware on them and not just a generic drive. Also do you know what your current version of SCOS that you are running on your system?

EB-2425 sound like a old Xyratex which means SC 30 or 40. When i startet in 2012 with Compellent the SC8000 was the rescent modell and the JBOD was SC2x0 or so.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this, but it looks like the version of our OS is 6.6.5 (from Help > About Compellent Storage Center). What kind of drives and firmware are compatible with my Compellent?

Okay - that's fair. Is there a page or something I can go to to take a look at these drives, and see what my size options are?

Sales may have something, but there's not anything support has that would be public facing. If there's a specific size or size range you're looking for, I'm happy to check for you. However, without further guidance on what you're looking for specifically, the best recommendation I can make would be to reach out to Sales.

I think ideally, we'd like to get as much space as possible with our remaining six licensed drive seats - 2TB or 4TB would be ideal.

Hi,
The part number looks correct, but we cannot be sure about drives sold by third parties and if the correct firmware is on the drives. Let us know if you have any additional questions.

I'm finding 1.8 TB 10,000 RPM drives through third party channels, with the Dell Part Number VTN9J work in our Series 40 with our 6.6.5 firmware? We are looking at purchasing a support upgrade that would allow us to get the latest firmware, but would these drives work? If we got six of them, would I be able to simply pop them in and add them to our disk pool live?

Fair! I appreciate it. There is one other Dell part number I'm curious about compatibility for: V768J
We will be giving our Dell representative a call tomorrow at 11 AM to knock out some of this.
