Controller Synchronization

Hi Everyone,

We just replace SCV3020 controller,

Would like to ask, how long will it take for the controllers to sync and how can we monitor the progress and verify either it is complete or not.

Thanks in advance

No, it is not recommended for both controllers in a Dell Compellent system to run different firmware versions. They should always be on the same SCOS.

During a firmware update, both controllers should update in sequence. If one controller fails to update (due to a reboot, communication issue, or manual interruption), it may remain on the older version.
This can lead to controller mismatch, which may cause failover issues or degraded performance.

Try to reboot the controller that ditn't update.

In case you can try with serial cable with our technical support indications.

Thanks

After replacing the SCv3020 controller, synchronization typically takes 15–45 minutes, depending on system load. You can monitor progress in Dell Storage Manager (DSM) under the Hardware tab—both controllers should show as “Up” and healthy when sync is complete.

Let us know if you see any alerts or need further help.

Hi Marco,

Thanks for the information, unfortunately controllers are unaccessible via web browser.

Storage manager also unaccessible now.

Going to replace 1 of the controller as the controller status is fail for safemode

Would like to know how to ensure that both controller are completely sync or still in progress via the com port session

Hi,

In order to check the sync status and progress, you need to connect to the replaced controller console to launch the boot sequence. The boot sequence will show multiple reboots and multiple process. Once it has finished the process, that's where the synchronization is completed. If the controller firmware is different, the synchronization will take longer.

Hello,

you can change it from Dell Storage Manager DSM in the Hardware tab section, edit controller settings windows.

You can also change the virtual management IP under storage center management ip address

Hi Marco B,

Found it on the Storage Center setting, TYVM.

Is it ok if both controllers running on different firmware version?

We run the update, it shows Storage Manager is up to date,

but still the controller firmware does not sync between both controllers.

Hi, I do not have a direct document that I can share with you. Could you check this thread How to re-image a Compellent? : r/storage It might be helpful.
