Compellent Snapshot for Exchange 2010 passive database copy
Hello all,
I have the following configuration: A DAG with 3 Exchange 2010 Mailbox servers, two of them are in the main datacenter and have the databases and logs on local storage. However the third server is on a remote datacenter for disaster recovery and the databases and logs are on Compellent storage. Of course because it is my disaster recovery site, the database is a passive copy. However, the Replay Manager Explorer 7.1.1.1 is unable to see the databases into the 'Exchange Stores' section. But if I activate any of the databases on that server, then Replay Manager is able to see it. My question is, how can I create snapshots of the passive database copy of my Exchange 2010 server?
Thank you!

I have confirmed that Replay Manager can not do this; the reason? DAGs have one active database and are essentially log shipping to update passive copies. Since they are not online and the DAG does synchronize status between servers the backup will always attempt to happen on the active. If only one of your DAG copies is on a Compellent, this will be a bigger problem.
There is no restriction against taking a scheduled Replay on the passive volume set - except the same warning that there will not be a quiece at the OS level and transactions being written to the log may not be valid. Unlike older versions of Exchange the IS will simply discard these as it commits the log to the datastore (if you try to mount from the replay in a disaster).

Hi,
I don't think you can. RM can only snap the active database.

I know you can do this on Dell EqualLogic SAN with their host side software Auto Snapshot Manager (ASM). It would be too bad if the enterprise grade storage can not do this.
