Compellent SCv2020 running fans at full speed 24/7?

Hi all,

We just deployed Compellent SCv2020 and the fans appear to be running at full blast 24/7.

Right before that, one of the controllers was not available which required Dell to dispatch someone on site, drain power from the batteries and power cycle the unit.

Is the loud fan noise something to expect with this DAS unit, as compared to a typical 1U Dell server for example?

Have you run across the controller not getting recognized, requiring a power drain and reboot on brand new equipment? Something to worry about long term?

Thanks!

I just installed a SCv3000 and the fans are running constantly as well. Unacceptably loud. Wish Dell would put  quality silent fans in their products. There is no need for noise in this day and age.

Anyone know of aftermarket options to drop the noise on a SCv3000?

No its not normal. If you power on a SCv20x0 there is around 2min silence..... and for 1min some noise as a huricane. After that sound level drops to "normal".

If you check with DSM or DSM Datacollector the Temperatur/FAN status under hardware tab what do you see?

I have deployed around 20 systems and never takes notes that they run on 100%. Only if you remove one controller when its running... that it goes back to 100%.

Regards,
Joerg

Thanks for following up. It seems like one of the ports connecting the two controllers went bad, so the whole array got its fans up to High / Medium / High / Medium.

Also, would it normally spool up the fans to max during a firmware update? Thanks

Hello AlexCher84,

The fans can spin at high speed when doing a firmware upgrade. In most cases they will for a few minutes then they will go back to normal speed. Also, if you are doing some heavy I/O for long period of time then the fans may spin at high speed for a bit.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

I have the same problem with SCv3020. Fans spin at a speed of 12,000 rpm. The temperature in the basket is 44 degrees Celsius. This is not the maximum, but still a terrible hum. Is it norm?dell-1.jpgdell-2.jpgal?

Hello Granitas,

What is the current version of SCOS on your SCv3020? I am going to send you a private message, & if you can provide me with your controller serial #’s or the system service tag?  Can you also enable secure console so that we can look at your system? Here is the link to enable secure console if you need it. https://dell.to/2vwL8Td

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

We are having this same issue on a SC5020.  It's been in production for months and since Monday 2/24/2020 the fans are at 12K RPM and extremely loud.  We have people with headaches now.  How can this be changed?

Rebooting iDRAC helped in my case. "Enjoy the silence"
