throttle question
Hi there ...
Can anybody tell me what is SAN COPY throttle is ....
This is the questions I have .
1 .If this throttle is set to default value 6 , The SAN Copy Session will not get quicker even VNX has no I/O usage,( with hosts )?
Means , throttle value will consider how busy VNX is .... and change oerformance ?
2 .Is there any other setting that allocate resouce for SAN COPY session when VNX is not Busy ..
--> I guess I should have update this question to VNX space ... but there is not many SAN COPY threads in VNX ...
And I believe SAN COPY mechanizm has not been changed since clariion era ...
let me know if I need to mover this thread to VNX space !
thanks

SANCopy is not aware of target performance metrics.

Hope the following information can help you
https://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h2099-emc-clariion-san-copy-wp.pdf , page 17,
This parameter is defined on a per-session basis. Throttle values range from 1 to 10, where 1 is the slowest, 10 is the fastest, and 6 is the default value. When throttle is set to 10, the system reads from the source and writes to the destination as quickly as it can, which causes many system resources to be allocated to that session. As you reduce the throttle from 10 to 1, SAN Copy reduces the internal buffer size and inserts longer delays between I/Os. This allows the session to run with less performance impact on other applications. The throttle value can be changed after the session is created and during the progression of the session. For example, you can start a session with the throttle set to 6 and, in the middle of the session, increase the throttle to 10. When a new session is started after completion of this session, the default throttle value of 6 is retained.

Hi Roger, dynamox !
Thanks for the reply!
So the throttle setting is based on CPU ( or SP Usage ) for Source ?
Not for Bandwidth ( Network ) ?
Thanks !

Hi Ayas,
Throttle is based on SP which in tern usage CPUs of that particular SP through which the session is being run.
If you increase the throttle value, it increases the utilization of network bandwidth as well.
Thanx
