soft media errors observed

Recently, I noticed one disk reported several soft media errors in the event log, is this a problem? Do we need to replace this disk immediately?

Most of the time, you may got soft media errors [bad block], I don't know the exact number of the threshold, FLARE will kick the hotspare in with the event number 803 [Recommend disk replacement] and will eventually proactively replace the issue disk automatically. That's one of the feature of FLARE.

software media error is normal for mechanical disk drive. CLARiiON will fix the bad sector itself. You don't need to replace it if the volume is not that much.

Is there a threshold? I don't know how many software media errors deserve a disk replacement.

Hi,

The FLARE will decide based on the type of softmedia error and kicks in the hotspare,if it fails to fix the issue.

The threshold varies for different errors.

Thanks

Sorry to chime in a few days late on this one. You can contact EMC supoprt and they have proactively replaced a number of my disks proactively, but the soft write errors has to be over a certain threshold in a given time period. If you had 7 soft write errors ten days ago and nothing since they most likely won't act, but if you're seeing a couple errors every few hours they'll be more likely to advise you to fail over to hot spare and ship a new drive. Like Steve said above, FLARE will do it for you as well. If you look at navisphere logs they will record soft write errors and if you're getting flooded give support a ring.
