Securely erase drives in a CX4-480?
Hi all, we're going to be retiring a CX4-480 soon and I need to securely erase the drives. I don't believe there's a way to do this through unisphere. If I buy a FC card for a computer and hook it to each DAE individually will that let the OS see and address each drive individually to erase them?
Thanks!

That won't work, our data/equipment can't be accessed by a third party even if it's to perform a secure erase.

We don't want to destroy the drives because we're going to re-use the equipment internally, just for a different purpose/group. There are simple to use DOD-style erasure utilities we use already on regular drives, I just don't have a way to talk to the EMC drives directly in a manner that I can assure they're really erased if we go through the normal array interface. That's why I was wondering if anyone had ever hooked an FC controller direct to a DAE and was able to address the drives directly.

If data is critical and you need to be assured and need peace of mind with out any hassle. Why do all the mentioned above?!
Check with your management and try EMC Data Erasure Services! I am sure you are going to love it for the first time how data is no more recoverable!
Here is the brochure for your ready reference: http://www.emc.com/collateral/services/consulting/h1321-certified-data-erasure-serv-ss.pdf

LOL! The company who have mfg. that device is not a third party but I get what you are saying!
I have never come across this scenario or never heard of this method but I have a hunch that this might work!
Logic behind my hunch is FLARE OS is Customized Windows OS. So if it can detect DAE. Windows Server Edition might be able to detect it too! But all this is If's and but's! I am not sure about this and this method is not even recommended even if it works! Just like we have have Data Erasure method, we and the world do have Data Recovery methods too! If your data is some Classified information the best method is too either involve Data Erasure Services or scrap those disks so that it cant be used again!
I will still stand by my earlier answer and request you to involve Data Erasure Services with your management involved. They might be able to come up with some solution, if you give 'em a chance!
If not, and you are still going on with the method you mentioned. Please, do share your experience with us!

If you have already deleted all the configuration on EMC CLARiiON there is no need to perform erasure if you are going to re-use it. The moment you create new RAID Groups, LUNs etc. The old data will not be accessible and the new data will overwrite existing chunks! I really do not suggest the method you have mentioned above, since you are going to re-use the storage unit. There are high chances of corrupting DAE firmware, Disk Firmware etc which will lead Disk Failure, Bad Slot issues on DAE etc!
EMC does have customers like your site and they have something worked up for Data Protection on Old Storage Systems! What? I do not know. For that you will need to call 'em up. (Do not misunderstand my brand advocacy and resolution for your query to marketing for EMC Data Erasure Services)
